In the GolfWRX forums: Ping i540 or Cobra 3DPX after a long P790 run?

Published

on

In our forums, a GolfWRX member ready to move on from TaylorMade P790 irons is comparing two players-distance options: Ping’s i540 and Cobra’s 3DPX.

@JTD0314 said the P790s had served him well, but he was ready for something different. The thread quickly became less about naming a universal winner and more about the details that matter when two strong iron designs fit the same broad category.

  • @Lobber said his i540s were compact, forgiving, high launching and workable, with no fliers through 25 rounds. He also reported more distance than the 3DPX, while noting the shafts were different.
  • @ShakeyT initially disliked the i540 feel indoors, then later said toe-side contact remained easy to identify and distance was consistent unless the strike was heavy.
  • @Strategery offered the opposite feel report, calling the i540s great and underscoring how subjective iron feel can be.
  • @mikec3672 liked both models but chose the i540 for its more compact look, workability and slight distance edge.
  • @cradd10 said his left-handed 3DPX set was good but had presented some turf-interaction issues.

JTD0314 later tested the i540 and came away impressed by its distance and dispersion, though he still had not found a left-handed 3DPX set to compare. That is the most WRX answer possible: the discussion narrowed the questions, but the final call still belongs to a side-by-side test with the right shafts and turf conditions.

In the GolfWRX forums — Using A.I. to help pick clubs?

Published

on

In our forums, one user is discussing how they’ve used AI to help with club fitting and game analysis, detailing the ways in which they found a new driver thanks to artificial intelligence insight.

@prouse25 wrote:

“I was in search for a new driver. My day job is in tech.  Decided to see how AI could help in the selection process.

“Been switching between two drivers lately. I can’t get the Titleist to spin enough – regardless of shaft. My old faithful is a TM Sim 2. It spins too much.

“I used trackman data, GHIN data, and swing videos to feed AI. I included TM core, Callaway Max and TD, Titleist 2 and 3, Srixon, and Ping G440 and 440K.  Shafts – stiff and X ranging from 72 to 50 grams in various profiles.

“The AI analysis was really interesting.  Trackman data started the process. However, suggestions changed dramatically when the swing videos were analyzed.

“Due to very smooth swing tempo, shaft suggestions went from mid 60 gram recommendations to a 50 gram counter balance shaft.  Stiffness went from stiff to stiff+ or x flex.

“The end result is the Ping G440K with their stock 50 Gram CB shaft tipped.  On course results and trackman data tell the same story – really good!.  AI still wants to tweak the setup. Wants constant feedback over the next 15 rounds with specific questions answered.

“AI became my fitter and quasi swing coach / strategist.”

Our members in the forum shared their thoughts on using AI for things like club selection, swing analysis, and other instruction. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • @MerryTex: “I think AI can be very helpful when prompted to correct information. I have felt that a lot of AI insights I’ve used for my game have helped me quite a bit. I have used it to determine certain club characteristics and preferences, as well has utilizing data from previous rounds. After using AI, I’ve become a little more conscious of my equipment choices as well as my practice and round habits. Since then, I’ve dropped from a 3.4 to a 2.6.”
  • @LUMA: “The more I am exposed to AI for this and that, the more I realize it’s not correct and just instantly spitting out the internet. Not saying it’s a bad thing, but I have personally disproven AI results many times very easily.Use it as a reading tool, not the solution. YOU are the solution. YOU feed the AI.”
  • @PJE: “I don’t think it’s useful for arcane subjects with lots of variables like club fitting. The biggest variable, of course, is the golfer and the way he or she delivers the club. It just spits out what is essentially conventional wisdom. Does that fit most people? Sure and probably by coincidence. If you know your game you could come up with the same results without AI.So is it innovative or truly interpretive of the situation at hand? Call me skeptical. As
  • @MashieMarksman suggested could a really good AI application be developed ? Yes, and I think if it was added to 3D printing, a golfer could have the ultimate optimized club.”
