Spotted: Driving irons at the 2026 U.S. Open
The third major is here for the men’s professional game this week as the golf world sets its eyes on Shinnecock Hills. The current layout is by William Flynn, dating to 1931. During this time the course was designed, a driving iron was very important to get to the ball in play.
That doesn’t change for this year either. On a par 70 measuring 7,440 yards, and being a U.S. Open setup, it means there is course management to navigate on the terrain, which has elevation change and plenty of wind.
This week, we spotted plenty of driving irons in play in this championship test.
Tyrrell Hatton

Tyrrell Hatton has the Ping iDi driving iron in the bag this week while scoping out the terrain. A Fujikura Ventus HB Blue Velocore+ shaft as well.
Jon Rahm

Jon Rahm has this Callaway Apex UT with a KBS Prototype shaft. With his signature penetrating ball flight and past U.S. Open Champion status, this could be a nice addition off the tee at Shinnecock with the forecasted winds.
Jackson Herrington

The University of Tennessee Volunteer is eloquently known as “The Fridge.” With no shortage of height, he also brings it with the clubs. Known for hitting it very long, this driving iron adds to his weaponry off the tee. This club has a Fujikura Ventus Black VeloCore+ 10 X shaft.
Jackson Van Paris

Jackson Van Paris is playing on the Korn Ferry Tour this year and is also in the U.S. Open. Playing a Titleist U505 2 iron with a Project X HZRDUS shaft.
It will be interesting to see how players navigate this course off the tee and for their approach shots with the firm, fast, and breezy conditions. One thing is for sure: players should have a high regard for patience and a low ball flight.

Selling my Tour Issue, Taylormade M5 10.5 head only. It’s in excellent condition with a perfect top line and minor scuffing to the sole. The carbon fiber is all still perfect.
