Scottie Scheffler shares memories (and lack thereof) ahead of CJ Cup Byron Nelson
Dallas resident Scottie Scheffler is playing a home game this week at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Not surprisingly, despite admitting to a “shockingly bad” long-term memory, the two-time major winner was asked about growing up playing against fellow Texans Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris as well as his recollections of last year’s tournament. Scheffler didn’t tee it up in the event last year as he and his wife, Meredith, were awaiting the birth of their son Bennett.
The world No. 1 had a few interesting memory-related replies during his pre-tournament press conference, which we’ve collected below.
Q. “Obviously this time last year, you had important things going on in your life. I wonder — I guess you guys were probably in wait mode…did you actually watch the tournament? What kind of emotions did you have while this tournament was going on?
Scheffler: “That’s a good question. It’s funny, some of our friends just had a baby. Their baby is probably 2 months old, and I remember them asking us, what did you do at the beginning when your baby wasn’t sleeping? How did you get your baby back to sleep? I was like, I have no idea what we did. I don’t really remember. It was all kind of a blur.
“So I can’t tell you if I watched the tournament last year or what. All I can say is it’s good to be back this year…”
A blur, indeed! I’m sure plenty of new parents share similar sentiments. The conversation turned to Scheffler’s junior golf recollections…
Q. …”Talking to Will Zalatoris at the Masters, he was recalling the first time you and he and Jordan played together at Bear Creek when he was like 9 years old. Do you have any memories of that? Sorry, I keep asking you about memory questions. If you don’t have memories of that, just kind of growing up with those two guys in Dallas and then playing this event.”
Scheffler: “I was going to say, as far as my long-term memory goes, it’s shockingly bad. I do have some recollections of playing with those guys. Will and I were always the same age. So we played in tons of tournaments against each other.”
“Jordan was three years older than us, and he was obviously really good. I would say Jordan was always a guy we looked up to when we were young. Let’s say when I was 13, 14 playing in team PGA events here, Jordan was here playing in the Byron Nelson. He was a guy we both looked up to and wanted to emulate on the course.
“It’s pretty wild to have three guys from the same area to have the success I think that we’ve had. A lot of that is just the competition. We were always looking at Jordan because he was a little bit older, a little bit better than us. Will and I were always kind of looking at each other because we were both pretty good. He’s a highly competitive guy as well so we were always trying to beat each other.
“We’ve had a great friendship for a number of years now, and golf’s always been a huge part of that. It’s really kind of fun to look back on the journey we’ve been on, and being able to live out our dream and play the PGA Tour is pretty cool.”
And finally, the man whose culinary tastes will always be linked with home-made ravioli shared his reflections on Korean food. Scheffler was asked what Korean items he remembers eating at the CJ Cup and what his favorite Korean food is.
His response:
“I went to college with Doug Ghim, so he introduced me to Korean barbecue and all that. I’m excited to go in there and eat some of the Bibigo stuff. It should be fun…”
Korean barbecue for the win!
Scheffler will be playing alongside Si Woo Kim and Jordan Spieth in an all-Texas trio. They tee off at 12:33 CDT.

Most birdies without breaking par – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, one user is wondering how many birdies other players have had in a round while still failing to break par. @Lalan45, unfortunately, asked the question after a unique experience of their own.
They wrote:
“Today I managed 8 birdies but still shot even par, could have been a round to remember! What’s the most birdies you’ve made in a round and still didn’t break par?”
Our members in the forum shared their own experiences with successful rounds that still resulted in a score over par. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- kwcsports: “I’ve had 5 a few times, still shot 80+ haha.”
- jda: “I played a course for the first time, had 8 birdies, 9 doubles and an eagle. The infamous no-par round. I kept the scorecard. Every shot had a creek that I did not know about, or I was within 8-10 feet for a birdie look. To this day, I have no idea if I should be really jacked up or mad about that performance.”
- jvincent: “I think my record is either 5 or 6. Probably shot 75.”
- Instron4204: “3 birdies and shot a 92…man I suck!”

Best current stock shaft 2026 – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, one user is asking for thoughts on the best stock shafts offered in 2026. Stock shafts are the shafts included with a club when it’s purchased from retailers or OEMs.
@DTorres asked:
The last couple years has seen a lot of updates and additions to no upcharge stock shafts, which do you think is the best offering in 2026?
Im a bit of a shaft nerd and recently during my Members Testing with the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond I found the updated Project X Denali Frost Black to be a fantastic stock shaft. I absolutely did not mesh well with the original Denali. Just curious what other people think are the current best Stock shaft offerings out with new models and stock Ventus options and LinQ options popping up here and there.
We were given the option for any stock shafts for our members review. I went with the 70g Black Frost 6.5 because it’s a shaft I don’t have, it’s an updated version of the original Denali and hear little about. I typically use a Diamana WB, GD VF or a HOF Raptor. I’m not saying it was neck and neck with any of those but it was a pleasant surprise I’m not accustomed to in stock shaft offerings.
Our members in the forum have been offering up their own thoughts on the best stock shafts available in 2026. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- rsballer10: “IMO – MCA Ka’ili White Darkwave, Tensei 1k Black/white, UST Lin-Q White. People are free to spend their money however they see fit, but for me personally the shaft catalogs these days have enough options that I don’t see the value of a $400 upcharge. I have never had a problem finding a no upcharge shaft that fits the bend profile and weight that I need. Whether the paint job is good enough or not is above my pay scale.”
- bcflyguy1: “Project X Titan Black. I’ve had one in 60TX in my Quantum TD Max for several weeks now. Have to give Titlieist their flowers for finding a way to make it available as a featured option; very shrewd bit of business and one that I suspect will be duplicated by the other companies. TT/PX have a certified banger on their hands with Titan.”
- CTG77: “Undoubtedly, it’s the Tensei 1K RIP shafts from Titleist. The Tensei line gives about 98% of the performance of a Ventus VeloCore+ shaft at a tiny fraction of the cost if you’re looking for a blue or red profile. The white is not an exact match for Ventus Black, but it’s closer to it than the non-VeloCore+ Ventus shafts that come from Callaway or formerly came from TaylorMade.”
