Tom Kim on swing struggles, Korean precision ahead of CJ Cup Byron Nelson

As the CJ Cup Byron Nelson tees off this week in McKinney (see our photos from the event here), South Korean rising star Tom Kim offered a candid look at his current form and the reasons why Korean golfers seem to thrive at this Texas-based event.

In a press conference ahead of the tournament, the 22-year-old acknowledged that while his iron play remains a pillar of his game, he hasn’t quite found the same rhythm that defined his standout performances in 2022 and 2023 — a period when he collected three PGA Tour victories.

“My golf swing is just not feeling so comfortable as it did last fall,” Kim admitted. “I think I’ve lost a few pounds just fitness-wise. And I think that’s got a little bit of — just my body is not used to it. I know it’s going to take time. But once I know I find it with where I am now, it’s going to be really good.”

Despite recent inconsistencies (Kim is 92nd in strokes gained: total this year) and not winning a PGA Tour event since the 2023 Shriners Children’s Open, he insisted confidence in his ball striking remains strong.

“The belief is very high with my game, knowing that if I just get anywhere near on a run, I feel I can hit it as close as anybody,” Kim said.

Looking ahead to this week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson, Kim was also asked why South Korean golfers seem to perform particularly well at the event. While he hesitated to offer a definitive answer for why three of the last five Nelsons have been won by South Koreans, Kim pointed to a national emphasis on precision and how that suits the course’s demands.

“I think Korean golf is very, very well known for the precision that we have,” Kim said. “When you can hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens—the greens are always really good here—so once that putter gets hot, you’ll make a ton of birdies, and that’s what you have to do out here.”

Kim also noted that changes in his own game and the course have shifted the dynamic. “When I first came here, I was at 163 ball speed, and now I’m at 174,” he said. “In ’22, when I was really precise with a lot of parts on my game, you just keep creating a lot of birdie opportunities.”

With the fairways at TPC Craig Ranch now tighter and the rough more penal, Kim believes the tournament will reward elite ball striking more than ever. “When you consider all the top Korean players, we’re pretty decent ball strikers. I think that’s why our guys have had success.”

Kim tees off Thursday at 12:44 p.m. CDT with countryman Sunjae Im and Canadian Taylor Pendrith.

In our forums, one user is asking for thoughts on the best stock shafts offered in 2026. Stock shafts are the shafts included with a club when it’s purchased from retailers or OEMs.

The last couple years has seen a lot of updates and additions to no upcharge stock shafts, which do you think is the best offering in 2026?

Im a bit of a shaft nerd and recently during my Members Testing with the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond I found the updated Project X Denali Frost Black to be a fantastic stock shaft. I absolutely did not mesh well with the original Denali. Just curious what other people think are the current best Stock shaft offerings out with new models and stock Ventus options and LinQ options popping up here and there.

We were given the option for any stock shafts for our members review. I went with the 70g Black Frost 6.5 because it’s a shaft I don’t have, it’s an updated version of the original Denali and hear little about. I typically use a Diamana WB, GD VF or a HOF Raptor. I’m not saying it was neck and neck with any of those but it was a pleasant surprise I’m not accustomed to in stock shaft offerings.

People are free to spend their money however they see fit, but for me personally the shaft catalogs these days have enough options that I don’t see the value of a $400 upcharge. Have to give Titlieist their flowers for finding a way to make it available as a featured option; very shrewd bit of business and one that I suspect will be duplicated by the other companies. CTG77: “Undoubtedly, it’s the Tensei 1K RIP shafts from Titleist. The Tensei line gives about 98% of the performance of a Ventus VeloCore+ shaft at a tiny fraction of the cost if you’re looking for a blue or red profile. The white is not an exact match for Ventus Black, but it’s closer to it than the non-VeloCore+ Ventus shafts that come from Callaway or formerly came from TaylorMade.”
