Webb Simpson switches back to Titleist 680 MB irons (and why he uses a 5.5-iron)

Back in May, Webb Simpson made a surprising switch to Titleist’s T100 irons.

The change wasn’t surprising because of the T100 irons themselves – fellow Titleist staffers Jordan Spieth and Will Zalatoris use the irons, after all – but because they’re cavity-back style heads. Throughout his career, Simpson has used almost strictly blade-style irons.

“I’ve had a couple of short stints with non-blades in my career but not many,” Simpson said in May. “I haven’t been hitting my irons great. Approach to the green is typically a strength for me; this year it’s been a weakness, and I’ve struggled out of the rough. I keep getting told that these the irons I’m playing are better out of the rough, better with distance control, better with mis-hits, and so I guess I was being stubborn, but finally listened and I really like them.”

As it turns out, however, the T100 irons were simply going too far.

“They were just too hot,” Simpson told GolfWRX on Wednesday at the 2022 Rocket Mortgage. “Too hot.”

For most golfers, adding a touch of distance isn’t a bad thing at all. On the contrary, it’s usually the goal for most amateurs when testing new irons.

For Simpson, though, he wanted to switch back into something he’s more comfortable with. Instead of switching into the 620 MB irons that he played prior to the T100 irons, however, Simpson switched into the 680 Forged MB irons that he used for years before the 620 MB’s. Remember, the 680 MB irons were first released to the public way back in 2003!

According to Simpson, he switched back into the 680 MB irons “a few weeks after the PGA Championship.”

Unique to Simpson’s set is a 5.5-iron, which is actually a 5-iron head that’s bent weak in order to properly fill his yardage gaps. At the 2022 Players Championship, Simpson explained to GolfWRX why he uses a weaker 5-iron:

“Because I needed a fourth wedge, and the only way to do that for me was take out a club, so I just weakened my 5-iron and strengthened my 7-iron. Because I had to take a club out, I would have a gap between 6 and 4. I’m going to have a gap no matter what, but it made a 15-yard gap between 8 to 7 and 7 to 5, so it’s not too bad.”

In our forums, one user is asking for thoughts on the best stock shafts offered in 2026. Stock shafts are the shafts included with a club when it’s purchased from retailers or OEMs.

The last couple years has seen a lot of updates and additions to no upcharge stock shafts, which do you think is the best offering in 2026?

Im a bit of a shaft nerd and recently during my Members Testing with the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond I found the updated Project X Denali Frost Black to be a fantastic stock shaft. I absolutely did not mesh well with the original Denali. Just curious what other people think are the current best Stock shaft offerings out with new models and stock Ventus options and LinQ options popping up here and there.

We were given the option for any stock shafts for our members review. I went with the 70g Black Frost 6.5 because it’s a shaft I don’t have, it’s an updated version of the original Denali and hear little about. I typically use a Diamana WB, GD VF or a HOF Raptor. I’m not saying it was neck and neck with any of those but it was a pleasant surprise I’m not accustomed to in stock shaft offerings.

CTG77: “Undoubtedly, it’s the Tensei 1K RIP shafts from Titleist. The Tensei line gives about 98% of the performance of a Ventus VeloCore+ shaft at a tiny fraction of the cost if you’re looking for a blue or red profile. The white is not an exact match for Ventus Black, but it’s closer to it than the non-VeloCore+ Ventus shafts that come from Callaway or formerly came from TaylorMade.”
