Jon Rahm switches putters to fix an issue with his stroke
World No.1-ranked Jon Rahm found plenty success with his former Odyssey White Hot OG Rossie S prototype putter. After all, it helped him win the 2021 U.S. Open and launch into his current place as the world’s best golfer.
There’s a fine line between comfort and complacency, though.
To stay on top, it’s important to monitor performance and identify any areas that need improvement. While it can be difficult to switch out a club that’s proven successful, it’s detrimental to keep a club in play at the expense of performance just because it’s worked in the past.
Recently, according to an Odyssey tour rep Joe Toulon, Rahm noticed he was “burning a lot of edges” with the Rossie, and he “wanted to look at a couple different heads.” His stroke was tending to get a bit steep with his former Rossie putter and lifting too much off the putting surface, which was negatively impacting his release of the putter head.

One of the putters that Toulon and Rahm tested was an Odyssey White Hot OG #7S model. Although Rahm had been using the Rossie during competition, he kept a #7 putter model at home that he would practice with, so he was already familiar with the head style.
“He’s always liked the #7, and he practices with one when he’s home,” Toulon told GolfWRX. “His path looked very good with it, stayed lower to the ground during the backstroke, which allowed it to arc nicely and put him in a great position to release the putter through impact.”

While both of the putters have the short slant neck hosel that Rahm prefers, the model designs are quite different. Rahm’s former Rossie putter has a center of gravity (CG) that’s a bit closer to the face due to the half-moon style head, whereas the CG of the #7S putter is a touch lower and further back in the head thanks to the low-sitting winged shape.
Since the #7S seemed to help Rahm keep the putter low to the ground and release the face better, the backup turned into the gamer for the final round of the 2022 Genesis Invitational.
That’s right. Although Rahm used his familiar Rossie putter for the first three rounds of the 2022 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, he switched into the new #7S for the final round.
As it turned out, the switch worked, and Rahm shot a final-round 65 making four birdies and an eagle.

Ahead of the 2022 Arnold Palmer Invitational, Rahm had only one putter in his bag: the Odyssey White Hot OG #7S. It appears that Rahm is sticking with the putter that helps his stroke stay low to the ground, rather than the Rossie that helped him win the U.S. Open.
In other words, when it comes to beating the world’s best golfers, Rahm isn’t staying satisfied.
For amateur golfers looking to find their right putter, remember that everyone has a different stroke. It’s important to identify your own tendencies and flaws, and find a putter that’s right for your stroke. Professional fitters can help immensely with this process, so be on the lookout for a certified putter fitter near you.

For golfers like myself, spending a lot of money on clubs, can stretch one’s budget. That said, a putter is different as roughly 1/2 your strokes are with this one club. I bought the putter ranked #2 in 2020 with the same style as his. List price, $99 sale $79. Looking at this years offerings, Tied with the top Blade, List $149 on sale $119. The one I originally bought, gave me 4 strokes a round back. I am looking at the new one, because it tested at the top from 20′ a range I have difficulty from. Forgot to mention…they’re Tommy Armour putters.

If it wasn’t a stub, I wonder if something got between the ball and the putter face? but it would be about the size of a peanut to take that much speed off the ball.
