2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Best prop bets
The PGA Tour heads to TPC Scottsdale this week, with a raucous crowd ready to greet a whole host of huge names that are looking to get their hands on the trophy in the desert.
With Matt Vincenzi covering the outright plays, this column looks to the side markets for the most appealing bets on this week’s card.
Russell Henley – Top-10/Top-20 +360/+170 (FanDuel)
Everything tells us that tee-to-green and constant, solid and beautiful ball-striking wins the races at the Phoenix Open, with five of the last six winners ending the event in the top two for strokes-gained-tee-to-green.
Despite finding it hard to win, 32-year-old Henley has risen inside the top-40 of the OWGR, chiefly because of a tee-to-green game to rival anyone for 54 holes.
Wins at the Honda and in Houston read well, but it’s his constant barraging of the greens that allows him to make one too many errors but still record three top-three finishes and eight top-10s in his last 40-odd events.
Ranking second in the field for tee-to-green over eight weeks (according to tour-tips.com) this season so far he’s finished runner-up in Hawaii and top-15 at the American Express, on both occasions recording top-10 figures for approach, greens and tee-to-green, whilst it’s of interest that his best finish in a major is that 11th at Augusta – scene of triumphs by Phil and Hideki Matsuyama, both winners here, and relative to Rickie Fowler, a winner here and with three top-10 finishes at The Masters.
He doesn’t appear to have to do more than repeat those stats to match a course record of 15th,16th and 30th in three of his last five here.
Adam Scott – Top 10/Top 20 +600/+250 (FanDuel)
The much-vaunted Aussie has similar claims to Henley and, despite the lack of a previous outing here, is another expected to make his high-class iron play count.
Ranked top for tee-to-green by the same site, he is plenty long enough to give himself short irons into the half-dozen ‘gettable’ holes, and the 41-year-old is still plenty good enough to get involved here judged on his win at the high-class Genesis at Riviera (a classic ballstrikers course) and 11 top-10 finishes over the last 50 events.
Those leaderboard placings include Torrey Pines, Sedgefield and at the CJ Cup last October, whilst he has warmed up nicely for this with a couple of top-10s in the two recent Dubai events on the DP World Tour, at which he recorded high gains for driving distance and green finding.
Keith Mitchell – Top 20/Top 30 +410/+240 (FanDuel)
The 30-year-old Bulldog has created a bit of a buzz in the outright market this week, and understandably so.
If we need a form guide, look at his win at PGA National in 2019, where he overcame both Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler, that couple sharing three victories at Scottsdale between them. Since then, Mitchell had every chance of winning at both the Wells Fargo (beaten by two shots after a final round 72) and at the CJ Cup, where a poor third round cost him any chance of being closer than within three shots of Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and that man Rickie again.
Including Houston in November, the selection had ranked top-eight for off-the-tee in all four of his completed starts and top-20 in three in tee-to-green and greens-in-regulation, including at Pebble Beach last week, when he finished 12th.
Improving from his debut here in 2019 to be top-20 a year later, his missed cut 12 months ago disguises the second round 68; he’s in significant form and is now within touching distance of a top-50 place in the world rankings.
Expect something good.
James Hahn – Top 20/Top 40 +700/+260 (FanDuel)
A bit of a speculative one here with the completely unpredictable but hugely watchable Hahn.
This is the Hahn that called a penalty on himself on his debut at The Masters, only to miss the cut by a shot. The Hahn that danced around the 16th green here at Scottsdale after a birdie in 2013 and that almost aced the same hole last year.
Put it simply, he loves this place.
In 2020, Hahn came here after three missed-cuts to finish tied-25th (17th at halfway) and last year sandwiched two missed-cuts with a top-10 (eighth at the cut) before a 15th place finish at Riviera.
Despite recent figures, he isn’t playing that badly.
Sure, the five recent missed-cuts in seven events look poor, but he was 15th at the Zozo at the end of October and whilst the opening 76 in Houston is not great, it is the only round over 72 in his last 17 rounds.
He can play the game, just not that often, so catch him at places he turns up at.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience
This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.
I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.
With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.
Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
