2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Best DFS plays from each price range

Published

on

After an exciting finish at Pebble Beach, we head to Scottsdale, Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The raucous crowd at the famous 16th hole followed by a memorable finishing stretch of holes has turned into a Super Bowl Sunday staple leading up to the big game.

The 2022 edition of the tournament will provide plenty of intrigue and an excellent field of 132 including Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Viktor Hovland, Patrick Cantlay, Hideki Matsuyama, Xander Schauffele, Daniel Berger, Adam Scott, and Webb Simpson.

TPC Scottsdale is a par 71 measuring 7,261 yards and features Bermudagrass greens (although they are much more of a blend rather than pure Bermudagrass).

Justin Thomas $11,000

Not only is “JT” due for a ceiling week, but TPC Scottsdale is the ideal spot on the schedule for it to happen. There are a few trends that point to Thomas as an eventual winner in Phoenix: Nine of the past ten winners at TPC Scottsdale have either a PLAYERS Championship victory, or a major championship. Thomas has both. Additionally, ten of the past eleven winners of the event have had a top seven finish or better in one of their last five starts at the WMPO. With finishes of 17th, 3rd, 3rd, and 13th respectively in his past four starts, Thomas certainly fits the bill.

Despite the lack of wins in the past calendar year, Thomas has sneakily been playing some very good golf lately. With five top twenty finishes in his past five starts including three top threes’, he has shown he has been slowly trending towards a victory.

9,000+

Daniel Berger $9,200:

Berger withdrew from the Pebble Beach AT&T Pro-Am last week with a back injury, which makes this a risky play. However, if he stays in the field this week, that is enough of an indication to me that he is healthy enough to roster in DFS. The 28-year-old is a perfect fit for TPC Scottsdale. He avoids trouble off of the tee and is one of the best iron players on the planet. He has gained strokes on approach in fifteen consecutive events and ranks 1st in Strokes Gained: Approach in both his past 24 and 36 rounds played. Berger has three top ten finishes in his past seven starts at TPC Scottsdale.

8,000+

Louis Oosthuizen $8,800:

Despite it being his first event played in months, I can’t help but go to Louis this week. For what it’s worth, the South African has played well coming off long layoffs in the past, with four of his worldwide wins coming in his first start of the season. He also has some encouraging course history having finished 3rd and tied for 11th here in two tries. He is steady off the tee and should be able to avoid most of the trouble that lurks around TPC Scottsdale.

7,000+

Cameron Davis $7,200:

Despite his potential volatility, Cam Davis is a risk worth taking in Phoenix this week. He is a first timer at the event, but that hasn’t stopped golfers from playing well at the event in the past. He crushes it off the tee and should be able to take advantage of the shorter par 5’s at TPC Scottsdale. Throughout his career, the Australian has gained a full stroke on the field in Birdie or Better Gained. He has also gained on the field in Eagles Gained, and Opportunities gained, making him an ideal candidate to score ample DFS points.

6,900+

Martin Laird $6,800:

At an event where course history tends to play a major factor, you won’t find many better options in the 6k range than “Party Marty Laird”. With three top 10 finishes in his past seven starts at TPC Scottsdale, he has the ceiling you are looking for when trying to round out a lineup. His finishes have been decent of late, and he gained strokes on the field in both Strokes Gained: Tee to Green and Strokes Gained: Approach in six consecutive starts.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

Published

on

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
