Valero Texas Open Preview: Bringing The Heat In Texas
By Scott MacLeod via Flagstick Golf Magazine (www.flagstick.com)
Temperatures will soar to more than 90 degrees Fahrenheit each day this week in San Antonio but it will be more than the weather that is heating up as the Valero Texas Open plays out.
There will be a diverse field on hand at TPC San Antonio as it hosts the Valero Texas Open for the second straight year. With The Masters having wrapped on Sunday the majority of the tour’s star power is taking a pass on Texas but at least a few players will bring back nine momentum from Augusta National to the Lone Star State.
One of those will be Australian Adam Scott who has to be considered the headliner in the field in Texas. Scott is not only coming off a tie for 2nd place at The Masters, he is also the defending champion this week.
In 2010 more than 3 inches of rain on second day of this tournament sent the schedule far off kilter. As a result the Sunday included 36 holes of golf, the first time that had happened since the 2009 John Deere Classic.
After opening with 71 and 70, Adam Scott brought his full arsenal of game for the 36 hole Sunday sprint where he fired 66, 67 to reach fourteen under par. That allowed him to slip past Swede Fredrik Jacobsen for a one stroke victory, his seventh career PGA Tour win. That also made him the very first winner on the AT&T Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio – a co-design by Greg Norman and Sergio Garcia.
Scott closed with seven birdies in his final round and made bogey on the very last hole to add a little drama to the proceedings. When Jacobsen missed a 17-foot putt for birdie on the 72nd hole to tie, Scott had earned his third consecutive PGA Tour victory in the state of Texas. He previously won the 2007 Shell Houston Open and the 2008 HP Byron Nelson Classic.
Scott also became the first player to win in his first appearance at the Valero Texas Open and the first Aussie to win the Texas Open since Bruce Crampton accomplished the feat in 1964.
That win, along with his Sunday charge at Augusta, should make Scott a man not to bet against this week.
Another man who made a run up the leaderboard on Sunday in Georgia is my real focus and hot pick for this week. That would be native Texan Ryan Palmer. After a rough start on Sunday at The Masters that saw Palmer blow to three over par for the day after three holes, he fought back admirably and went four under par for his last six holes to secure his first top-ten in a major championship.
In 2010 Palmer tied for 9th at the Valero Texas Open, mostly on the strength of his course record tying score of 64 in the final round. Palmer can really bang the ball (a necessity on the 7,522 yard long AT&T Oaks Course) and has proven that he is comfortable in challenging the course as his 18 birdies in last year’s tournament attests to. This all adds up to a lot of confidence and why I make him out as the player with the best chance of going head to head with Adam Scott this week to challenge for a win.
Also keep an eye on Jimmy Walker who has shown flashes of brilliance this year with three top-tens in nine starts. He also had a tie for 3rd at the 2010 Valero Texas Open. This is a home game for Walker as a San Antonio resident and a former Baylor Bear. There can’t be enough said for sleeping in your own bed during to a tournament week to make you feel mighty relaxed.
There will also be six major champions in the field in San Antonio but none will be more dangerous that Angel Cabrera and Geoff Ogilvy who were also in the mix on Sunday at Augusta National.
And one last note for this week. In a unique touch the courtesy cars in San Antonio are Ford F-150 King Ranch pick-ups. The trucks are part of the Valero Texas Open’s campaign of being “unapologetically Texan.”
Saddle up cowboys; it’s going to be a hot one! It may not be a major but with $6.2 million on the line including $1.116 million to the winner the competition should be just as hot as the temperatures.

GolfWRX’s Father’s Day Gift Guide (2026)
A reminder from your friends at GolfWRX: Father’s Day is June 21. And as we do every year, we’re rounding up the best gifts for dad.
As we say every year, there’s no better golf-related Father’s Day gift than a round of golf with pops. Be it a country club or your favorite muni, take the time to get together to play 18 if you can.
Let’s get to the gifts.
Ghost Golf Qualifier Diamond Polo

We like the new polos that Ghost is offering, as the fabric and fit are so good. These new Qualifier Collection polos breathe well, are lightweight, stretch with your swing, and of course look great. You can wear them on the course, in the office, or just out at a casual event and they will fit right in.
STR8-Strip Grip Tape Remover

If your dad is an equipment aficionado and tinkers with his clubs, this tool works wonders. Removing grip tape has never been easier, just put a little head on the tape and the STR8-Strip peals it right off the shaft without any damage.
Why Golf: Putting Thing

When it comes to practice, it is good to have a purpose. This “Putting Thing” sure does it. We know from personal experience how challenging it can be and how rewarding it is on the practice green. This also provides some competition for your kiddo to see who will unload the dishwasher or do the next chore around the house.
OluKai Lae‘ahi Men’s Breathable Slip-On Shoes

Riding to and from the course in style and comfort is always a good thing. If you’re in a hurry, it’s a nice feature to slide into your shoes and get to the tee time. For the post-game shoe, at your locker or while putting your clubs away in the car. Nice to slide into a shoe that looks good anywhere. Pair that with meeting the family for dinner, no need to change!
Therabody Theragun Relief

A little wellness goes a long way. Keeping loose is a good way to go when it comes to the weekend game or treatment during the week. If there is a little ache or pain, the Theragun is there to help out. Help loosen up the back for a pre-game warm-up or cool-down.
World Cup golf apparel

Something for the soccer dads. Embrace the World Cup fever this summer on the course with custom gear to support the nation of your choice.
FootJoy Pro SL spikeless golf shoes

Give the old man a break and save his feet with the Footjoy Pro SL Men’s Spikeless Golf Shoes for some added comfort on the course.
