A different Tiger from the ’06 chess match at Hoylake
I’ll try to keep this short, since this is really just an excuse to post the video, which comes equipped with some tremendously creepy, yet somehow fitting music. We already highlighted the changes to the course, so I’ll keep this breakdown related to Tiger’s ’06 montage.
We’re going to see a different Tiger this time around at Hoylake, with some differences more obvious than others.
- Haney vs. Sean Foley: I’ll leave the swing breakdown to the true experts, but his position at the top of the backswing will assuredly look flatter and more compact due to a new swing philosophy and a few surgeries.
- Less aggressive club twirls and a change of strategy. Those are some SERIOUS club twirls. This year’s course will force the driver into his hands. He avoided bunkers all week in ’06 and it would be a tremendous feat to repeat the same accomplishment eight years later.
- Smiling off putts (at the 1:33 mark). Tiger’s quiet confidence will most likely be replaced by a more grind-it-out facial expression. Things just don’t come as easy as they used to for various reasons. Missed putts aren’t as funny.
- You see the size and color of that 3 wood? If his 2014 WITB is any indication, expect his fairway woods to have the bright red flair of Nike’s Covert fairway woods Also, his Scotty Cameron Newport 2 has been replaced by a Nike Method 001, a putter that still hasn’t seen a major championship victory.
- The color of his shirt and hopefully Sergio Garcia’s, too. Although it’s a Tiger montage, Sergio’s shirt/pants/shoes/hat/belt combo unfortunately sneaks into view throughout the video. I still can’t get the image of Sergio’s banana suit out of my head.
- Another Sergio sidebar: Garcia finds himself in a better place with the flatstick than he’s likely ever been. His “claw” putting grip has him currently ranked 28th on the PGA Tour’s Strokes-Gained putting statistic. He also finished 8th in Strokes-Gained Putting in 2013 and 26th in 2012. He’s my favorite for this week.
As for Tiger’s Sunday wardrobe, Vegas odds have him at a 22/1 chance to win, which by my estimation are about his odds of making the cut. My assumption is based on his missed cut at the Quicken Loans National, the fact he’s admittedly rusty and a leaked practice round video from The Open that shows he’s still far from sharp.
- I see you there Stevie. I won’t get into that saga, but Stevie Williams’ services will be with world No. 1 ranked Adam Scott.
- Speaking of his golf bag, Tiger will be rocking a new black-and-green club-holder, donning the MusclePharm name. Relevance? Well, none really, but an observation nonetheless.
- The ABC logo will be replaced by an ESPN logo. And in fact, you can watch an entire channel, ESPN 3, that follows only Tiger in his bid to win his 15th major championship and defend his British Open title at Hoylake. The group of golf fans that despise the over-the-top coverage of Mr. Woods should steer clear. Actually, that same group of golf fans probably despises this article as well. If you’ve made it this far before commenting negatively, I appreciate you spending the time to at least formulate an opinion based on the full piece.
At least we can agree on one thing, the tactical way Tiger pieced apart Hoylake in ’06 was amazing. To expect the same chess-moves this time around is wishful-thinking by golf fans, but it’s nice to look back in time to see some things that we won’t this week.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience
This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.
I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.
With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.
Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!

Nice piece. I’m a Tiger supporter. I think he came back too early. I hope he makes the cut and goes low.
