J. Korda fires caddy mid round, boyfriend fills in
For the majority of people in the world, there has been a day when they went to work unsure of whether or not they would be returning home with the same job that they began the day with.
This, however, was not something that Jason Gilroyed was concerned with when he picked up Jessica Korda’s violet TaylorMade R1 staff bag at the beginning of Saturday’s third round of the U.S. Women’s Open. But when he and his player made the turn, he was in for a surprise. The 20-year-old Korda promptly fired him and had her boyfriend, Web.com player Johnny DelPrete, loop the rest of the day for her.
When asked why she decided to fire Gilroyed — who had been caddying for her for a little more than a year — mid round Korda said:
“It’s a U.S. Open. It’s tough out there. It just wasn’t working out.”
What made the situation even more awkward was that Korda’s entire family was in attendance at the championship, with her 14-year-old sister in the field and her dad caddying for her. The majority of the hype surrounding the Korda family coming into the week was about Jessica’s sister Nelly, who not only qualified but made the cut at such a young age. But all the talk has shifted to Jessica and the bizarre decision she made early Saturday afternoon.
The unorthodox firing by Korda appeared to have paid off, as she was able to clean up her front-nine 40 with a tidy 36 on the back nine. That left her in sixth place after 54 holes — just one spot back of where she began the day. As Jessica moves forward, she says her boyfriend Johnny will not be on the bag, and he will likely see his last caddying action in Sunday’s final round, where Jessica starts 11 shots back of leader Inbee Park.
For those who think that this is a tragic situation for the caddy, I wouldn’t worry too much. Having carried bags for many of the LPGA Tour’s best players, it is unlikely that Gilroyed will be unemployed for long.

Photos from the 2026 OccuNet Classic
With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.
It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.

I suppose when you are a caddy you do have to go into it knowing you can be fired but honestly what was her BF going to do. Did he walk the course and get all the data like most caddies do? She had 9 holes to go and should have just played it out, show some respect to the guy. But then some pros have no class at all and JK just proved that…I hope she did one of her father’s asinine scissor kicks when she fired him

I say good for her!! Took guts to do that. Sounded like from her interview that this was something that had been brewing. Unorthodox…sure.
