Golf bets: Hollywood and the $5 Nassau

When it comes to golf betting games, there is a wide variety to choose from.  Some, such as Skins, are simple to follow.  For others, like Acey Deucey, you may need a B.A. in Mathematics to calculate the scoring.

The purpose of any golf bet is to make things “interesting”. In other words, it provides another reason to concentrate and compete. The size of the wager can vary depending on the parties involved, but it should be high enough to provide an extra incentive and low enough to attract interest.

Also, golf bets should not slow down play. At a time where slow play is the most common complaint among golfers, any betting game that prevents your group from playing ready golf simply adds to the problem. Games like “Wolf” or “Bingo Bango Bongo” require players to hit in sequential order.  If you have just one human rain delay in your foursome, you are easily looking at 5.5 hour round.

Anytime I tee it up, I like to initiate the betting. I have two betting games I like to play depending on the situation.  If I am playing in a foursome, I like to play a version of Round Robin (aka Hollywood), which we play without handicaps. You partner up with each member of your foursome for six holes. There are two points on each hole for low ball-high ball. Anytime a duo finds itself down by four or more points, each member of that team gets a stroke on the next hole. The losing team retains the extra stroke until they are down by less than 4 points. The great thing about this bet is that it keeps the game very close. Most of the time, the end result rests on the final hole where either you define the moment, or the moment defines you.

If you aren’t a fan of team golf then let me suggest the Nassau. It is my favorite bet when teeing it up as a twosome. The Nassau is considered the most popular betting game for weekend golfers, but I am still surprised by the number of people that have never heard of it. As a result it is becoming a lost art for a new generation of golfers.

The Nassau is actually three bets: front nine, back nine, and overall. It is best when scored as match play. Handicaps are used to determine the number of strokes one player must give another. In my opinion, it is the easiest and fairest betting game in golf. All that matters is the score at the end of each hole. Because the Nassau is perfect for ready golf, it is a nice fit for players of all levels.  You could play an entire afternoon behind a group involved in a Nassau and never know that a money match was in play.

So next time you tee it up, propose a Nassau to your group and you will find your friends will nod approvingly. Some might even ask, “How do you feel about an automatic 2-down press?”

We like the new polos that Ghost is offering, as the fabric and fit are so good. These new Qualifier Collection polos breathe well, are lightweight, stretch with your swing, and of course look great. You can wear them on the course, in the office, or just out at a casual event and they will fit right in.

Why Golf: Putting Thing

When it comes to practice, it is good to have a purpose. This “Putting Thing” sure does it. We know from personal experience how challenging it can be and how rewarding it is on the practice green. This also provides some competition for your kiddo to see who will unload the dishwasher or do the next chore around the house.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
