David Carey (T18 at The Open) is using TWO drivers at St. Andrews

David Carey, currently T18 through two rounds at The 2022 Open Championship, is using two different drivers at The Old Course at St. Andrews.

Carey, aka Mr. 57, is from Castleknock, Dublin, and he wears a “DC57” Hogan hat because he once shot 57 during the Cervino Open on the Alps Tour in 2019 (the lowest recorded round in a world ranking event).

While most players in the field are trying to figure out a low-launching driving iron option off the tee on the firm, fast and windy conditions at St. Andrews, Carey goes a different route entirely.

He is using two drivers: Titleist’s new TSR3 (9 degrees), and a Titleist TSi3 (10 degrees), each equipped with LA Golf shafts.

After posting the video above to TikTok and Instagram, GolfWRX spoke to Carey about why he’s using two drivers at The Open. Apparently, it’s not a course-dependent decision, but something Carey has done before.

“I rarely carry a 3-wood, so when I need something shorter, I use the 10-degree,” Carey told GolfWRX. “Spin rates are higher (high 2000’s), so that’s the draw club, or if I was to drop back the speed and just chip one.

“The 9-degree has low 2000’s, so if I want to push the speed faster, or play more fade, or into the wind, I use that.

“It’s not something I do every single week, but it’s fairly common for me.”

According to Carey – a Ping staffer who plays lead-taped Ping i210 irons – he has “one of the most unique gear setups around.” With two drivers and lead tape on the irons, he’s certainly off to a nice start.

Carey is currently T18 at The Open, and when the event is complete, we’re planning to catch up with him to get a full rundown on his setup and specs, so be on the lookout for more.

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.
