Collegiate stars to play for a spot in the Northern Trust Open

Published

on

This year at the Northern Trust Open, tournament officials are rolling out something new. On Monday, Feb. 16, the Northern Trust Open will kick off with something organizers are calling the Collegiate Showcase.

Here’s what it is

Tour pros are slated to play alongside 14 top collegiate golfers and an additional 28 amateurs. The pros and two amateurs will compete in a best-ball competition for the College Showcase Trophy and a $50,000 donation to the winning university’s golf program.

The collegians, for their part, will play their own ball for…wait for it…a spot in the Northern Trust Open.

How cool is that?

Talking about the Showcase, Northern Trust Open Executive Director O.D. Vincent said:

“Our goal is to promote growth of the game by bringing more attention, and ultimately funds, to collegiate golf, and to offer another avenue for an up-and-coming collegiate player to experience the best the PGA TOUR has to offer.”

Here are the players and college golfers set to take part in this interesting and innovative competition to experience “the best the PGA Tour has to offer.”

So, basically there are not enough Pros signing up to play and they have to fill the field with amateurs???

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.
