DeLaet’s 2013 season cements him as Canada’s best golfer

Graham DeLaet, a 31-year-old native of Weyburn, Saskatchewan, has made a name for himself on the PGA Tour in 2013, while also securing his spot as Canada’s top golfer.

He’s currently No. 7 in the FedEx Cup standings, which means he’s in the running for the FedEx Cup’s $10 million prize this week. In order to win the Tour’s season-long championship, DeLaet must win the Tour Championship and have any golfer other than Tiger Woods or Henrik Stenson finish second to claim victory, which has given him 40-1 odds.

Delaet has continued his impressive 2013 campaign with a strong showing in the Playoffs, earning a season-best T2 finish at The Barclays. The he finished third at the Deutsche Bank Championship the following week, and notched a top-30 finish at the BMW Championship last week.

“I feel like I’ve been just playing really well all year,” DeLaet said. “I’ve just been putting a lot better probably the past four or five months and I think that’s kind of been the difference for me.”

In 2013, DeLaet has seven top-10 finishes and 12 top-25’ss in only 25 events, which is no doubt aided by his exceptional driving ability (he’s No. 1 in total driving on the PGA Tour). He also has cashed in over $2.7 million in earnings and has climbed all the way to 33rd in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Although DeLaet is winless on the PGA Tour, his track record suggests he won’t be for long. He has three wins on the Canadian Tour (now PGA Tour Canada) at the Desjardins Montreal Open (2008), ATB Financial Classic (2009), and Players Cup (2009), as well as a win on the Sunshine Tour at the BMG Classic (2009). He also won 10 tournaments during his college career at Boise State University.

Following this week’s Tour Championship, DeLaet will play in The Presidents Cup at Muirfield Village on Nick Price’s International Team, marking the first time a Canadian has earned that honor since Mike Weir in 2009. So regardless of what DeLaet does this week, Canada should be proud of their brightest new golf star. And if the Playoffs are any indication, he’ll be someone the country can root on for years to come.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
