Snedeker, Cabrera, 3 Aussies rise to top

Published

on

If you’re an Australian, you have to feel pretty good about the chances of your country’s Masters drought coming to an end tomorrow.

Adam Scott, Marc Leishman and Jason Day all are poised within striking distance of co-leaders Angel Cabrera and Brandt Snedeker entering the final round of the Masters Tournament.

It was Cabrera who emerged from the pack early, vaulting to 7-under after a birdie at No. 10. The two-time major champion fell back to 5-under with bogeys at Nos. 12 and 13, before eventually righting the ship and returning to 7-under with a birdie at the last and a third-round score of 69.

The Argentinian has to feel good about his position, as he was the most recent third-round-co leader to go on to win the Masters, which he did in dramatic fashion in 2009 in a playoff over Chad Campbell and Kenny Perry.

Snedeker, for his part, began the day at 4-under like Cabrera and finished the day at the same mark as the Argentinian. He moved to 7-under for the tournament after quality birdies on Nos. 15 and 16.

The Australian contingent, Scott, Leishman and Day all were in fine form as well on Saturday at Augusta.

Adam Scott, who has made 47 consecutive Masters starts, will look to erase memories of his final-round collapse at Royal Lytham last year. Scott was solid with the putter all day long and firing a third-round 69.

Leishman, the most unheralded of the trio of Australians entering this week, who surprisingly opened the tournament with a 66 has remained steady over the past two days. The 2009 Rookie of the Year had an up-and-down Saturday, carding five birdies and five bogeys.

Seeking to move on from a withdrawal at the tournament last year due to an injured ankle, Day, who finished tied for second two years ago at the Masters, looked solid until the final two holes. Day finished bogey-bogey, to drop from 7-under to 5-under.

Matt Kuchar flew under the radar most of the day at Augusta, but improved from 1-under to 4-under over the course of his round and is well within striking distance heading into Sunday. Another American, Phil Mickelsonm didn’t fare so well. The left-hander fired a 5-over 77 to plummet down the leader board.

Also shooting 77 Saturday was amateur sensation Tianlang Guan. Guan, of course, made the first rules-related headlines of the week yesterday when he was docked a stroke for slow play. The penalty though, didn’t deter the 14-year-old, as he became the youngest player ever to make the cut at Augusta.

Most of the discussion on moving day at the Masters concerned Tiger Woods post-round move down the leader board after the Rules Committee of Augusta National assessed him a two-stroke penalty for a bad drop on No. 15 Friday.

The powers that be elected not to disqualify Woods however, invoking rule 33-7 of the Rules of Golf. For more on what that means in plain English, read our breakdown of the decision.

And for quality pieces arguing the “Should he or Shouldn’t he have been disqualified” debate. See the two linked articles.

I’m an Australian Ben and I’m very excited about tomorrow. We’ve been waiting many years for an Australian to win the US Masters.

I’m taking nothing for granted because there’s still plenty of great players around the top of the leaderboard. I think Snedeker will be very hard to beat. I tipped him at the start of the year to win a major and the Masters might be the one for him.

Can’t wait for the action to start tomorrow!

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
