Day leads at 6-under
After an ideal day for scoring on Thursday, early morning rain, blustering winds and more difficult pin placements greeted the field of 93 on Friday. At the time ESPN went on the air (3 p.m. EST) there were already 35 double bogeys made by the field against only 37 total during Thursday’s play.
Australian Jason Day will sleep on the lead after 36 holes with a 6-under-par total. After an opening with a 70, Day reeled off six birdies for a round of 68 to post the low round of the day.
Fred Couples, the 1992 Masters Champion, birdied No. 18 to finish with a 71 and 5-under total. The Seattle native played a solid back nine with two birdies against no bogeys and finished the day in a tie for 2nd place.
First round co-leader Sergio Garcia followed his flawless opening-round 66 with a birdie-less 76 on Friday that moved him from the top of the leader board to a tie for 14th at 2-under. Fellow Round 1 co-leader Marc Leishman finished Friday’s play with a 73 in the windy conditions, tied with Couples at 5-under.
Angel Cabrera, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedeker are also close to the lead heading into the weekend, finishing at 4-under and a three-way tie for 4th.
The group at 3-under is formidable with names like Adam Scott, Jason Dufner, K.J. Choi, Lee Westwood, David Lynn and World No. 1 Tiger Woods.
Woods had a Jekyl and Hyde-type round on Friday, with a brilliant 33 on the front followed by frustrating back nine 38 that included a bogey at No. 15 where Woods’ near-perfect lob wedge from 86 yards hit the flag stick on the fly and ricocheted into the water in front of the green.Woods got up-and-down for bogey, and parred No. 17, but he three-putted the par-4 No. 18 for a 71.
“My score doesn’t quite indicate how well I played today,” Woods said. “I really played well”
Rory McIlroy is very much in the mix at 2-under. His round included three birdies and an eagle at the oar-5 No. 8. He is currently in a tie for 14th in a group that includes Sergio Garcia and former Masters champions Bernhard Langer and Charl Schwartzel.
The big story early on was the play of 14-year-old Tianlang Guan from China, who posted a respectable second-round 75 to follow his 73 on Thursday, but the round was overshadowed by a one-shot slow play penalty that was assessed to him.
After being warned about his slow play on the par-5 No. 13 and again on No. 16, Guan was assessed a penalty on No. 17. It’s the first time that a player has been penalized for slow play in a major since the 2004 PGA Championship.
Despite his rare infraction, Guan handled the situation with maturity.
“I respect the decision,” he said after the round. “Still a wonderful experience for me. I enjoyed this week so far. I think I did a pretty good job.”
His playing partner, two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw was vocal about his disagreement with the ruling.
“And this isn’t going to end up pretty, I don’t think,” Crenshaw said. “I’m sick. I’m sick for him. He’s 14 years old, we’re playing when you get the wind blowing out here, believe me, you’re going to change your mind a lot. I’m sorry, I’m a player, but it is not easy to get around this golf course the way it’s set up for [these] two days.”
Guan did indeed make the cut and finished the day tied for 55th a group that includes 2012 Masters Champion Bubba Watson. Three-time Masters Champion Phil Mickelson is 3-over and in a tie for 48th.

When it comes to practice, it is good to have a purpose. This “Putting Thing” sure does it. We know from personal experience how challenging it can be and how rewarding it is on the practice green.
