What’s your favorite golf saying? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, one user (and a new golfer to boot) has asked a surprisingly provocative question: namely, ‘what’s your favorite golf saying.’ The question inspired answers both expected and unpredictable.

@hankj asked:

I’m new to golf this summer, and one unexpected delight has been all the funny/pithy/telling/wise old saws (aka sayings) one hears on the course and around the clubhouse.

My current favorite:

It’s a long walk from the driving range to the first tee.

Ain’t that the truth!

Our members in the forum have been offering up their own favorite aphorisms. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • JimmyC59: “Regarding my own shots: ‘That’s a good miss’ and ‘Well, it’s not horrible.’
For golfers who get angry on the course. ‘You’re not good enough to get so mad!’”
  • Dabetic: “‘Scorecard doesn’t care’ re bad/ugly shots working out…doesn’t matter how you get it done.”
  • Cellis: “Was playing a pretty tight course struggling with driver and was ready to shut it down for the day. Older gentleman I got paired with said, ‘Young man, just let the big dog eat, what is the worst that can happen, hit another ball?’ Helped me swing a lot more freely on the tee and become more successful not only that day but days on.”
  • sheepdawg: “They call it golf because s**t and f**k were already taken.”

GolfWRX member testing: Callaway Quantum drivers

Published

on

Our forum faithful are well acquainted with the incredible giveaways and review opportunities in the realm of threads and comments, but we want to ensure front-page readers are involved as well.

Callaway Quantum Drivers

We’ve tapped a group of our most trusted members from GolfWRX to test Callaway’s latest driver innovation, featuring a breakthrough Tri-Force Face designed to deliver a quantum leap in ball speed and distance, even on off-center strikes. This new face technology layers ultra-thin, high-strength titanium, Poly Mesh, and carbon fiber into a fully integrated speed system, a combination never before used in driver face design. Throughout the testing process, members are encouraged to share honest feedback and insights with the community. If you have any questions along the way, feel free to jump in as the testers and the Callaway team will be happy to answer them.

For the first time ever, Tri-Force Face features ultra-thin, high-strength Titanium that is 14% thinner. Reinforced with Poly Mesh and Carbon, the result is a faster face, more ball speed, and longer walks to get to your ball.

How we choose our testers

GolfWRX staff evaluates each entry against the criteria laid out in the testing thread to determine the best fit for each specific product — For example, if a game-improvement iron is being tested, game-improvement iron-playing golfers will be considered.

Member review highlights

@DTorres (Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond 8 degrees):

We were let loose to choose any of the Callaway stock options, to further help the community I chose a stock shaft that was updated this year that so far had very limited feedback available to the public, the Project X Denali Frost Black 70 X-stiff (74g/3.2 torque). I sent GolfWRX my specs (45” playing length, green dot adapter, Callaway z grip(46g) +4 wraps and a D4 swing weight) and within 48 hours Callaway delivered……in Quantum speed.

This thing is scary fast. First impressions of performance is that this model is that it’s built for the bomber. I felt like this club was illegal. I have never hit a driver that was this forgiving for a low spin model. I hit this thing all over the face with aggression and rarely saw anything above 2800rpm. I’m glad I did not go TD Max because this thing just feels right, is a spin killing monster and I could see needing anymore forgiveness. Sound is phenomenal, muted but punchy. Feel incredible, the new face technology does feel different between prior Callaway models, the best way I can describe it is springy with a lot of vibration dampening. Wonderful on Miss Hits. I was quite surprise to see it beat up a bit on my Krank like it did, the Krank has been really good. Really good doesn’t beat Awesome though.

@tour_blu (Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond 9 degrees @8):

It took me a few swings to feel comfortable, but once I did I couldn’t stop hitting this thing!  125 swings later and I got some really good initial data on the Trackman with RCT ProV1’s.

I’m typically 290-300 yards total on Trackman and often struggle to keep spin down (even with my GT4).

Once I got the hosel set to N,-1, the Quantum Triple Diamond Max started to really impress me.

Here are the key takeaways:

  • I’m still not sure if my preferred shot shape will be a fade, but when I did move it that direction – spin stayed in the mid to high 2,000’s which was really controllable.
  • Speed was good, but I definitely have some room for improvement on smash factor.  I averaged 1.46 and was able to get a handful of 169 ball speed (which is pretty good for me after a long winter of not swinging much).
  • Spin consistency across the face seems to be the big talking point this year, and it delivered!  I had a few really spin up on me but those were +6 AoA with a wide open face.  I didn’t get any super low spin ones that drop out of the sky, which is a great sign.
  • My longest drives were low spin draws.  14 launch, 1800 spin, 165+ ball speed (which is no surprise).

Ball speed and Spin were the main things I’m trying to optimize right now, so I included a snapshot from the Trackman web app.  I included my best 17 shots with the N, -1 setting and threw out any bad swings.

By the end of my session I was getting really close to 170 ball speed, so I’m expecting to be able to improve on these averages next time out.  If I can add a few MPH and drop spin 150 RPM I think theres some good gains to be had.

@Jtgavigan (Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond 9 degrees):

Realistically, this is still a new driver to me, as I have only had it 18 days. However, this is FIRMLY in the bag. The looks, feel, and performance has been outstanding. The Ventus Blue/flat cog setup sealed it. It was so close before. This seriously has a chance to be the best driver I have ever owned.

I love the fact that I feel like I can tee it down and keep it in play or tee it up and send it if I need to. I have already set a personal ballspeed record with it at 172.9mph, and have been doing zero speed training.

TD Max was also measurably better than anything else I hit in my driver fitting. Everything is good these days honestly. I could have made lots of stuff work, but nothing was beating TD Max.

It is fast and incredibly forgiving. I have made some pretty bad swings and it still stayed in play. It isn’t idiot proof as no driver is. I am thinking we may be talking about this driver in the same terms as 2016 TM M2, PING G400, and Titleist 975D. That isn’t hyperbole. It seems to be getting universal praise, as does the whole lineup. This is a REALLY good head. It is low spin, so consider lofting up.
