Brooks Koepka makes another putter switch, back with Scotty Cameron at The CJ Cup Byron Nelson

Published

on

“Well, I don’t bring it up, you guys do,” Brooks Koepka said on Wednesday ahead of The CJ Cup Byron Nelson when he was quizzed by journalists about his putting woes since his return to the PGA Tour this year.

With that, he let it slip that he would be making another putter change, this time to a Scotty Cameron Fastback 1.5, after a brief stint with two different TaylorMade Spider models.

“Switched putters again this week for something I feel like released on its own, something I’ve been trying to – been fighting a little bit, and I feel like it definitely releases a little bit,” Koepka explained.

Since Koepka’s return to the PGA Tour from LIV Golf, only seven players on the circuit have hit the ball better from tee to green than the five-time major champion. Once getting onto the putting surfaces, Koepka ranks 141st in SG: Putting, losing almost half a shot to the field on the greens. This has been mirrored in his short time back on Tour, with now his fourth different putter set to be gamed.

Initially starting the season in his usual Scotty Cameron Teryllium Tour Newport 2, Koepka made his first change of the season at the WM Phoenix Open, where he switched to a TaylorMade Spider Tour X. After apparently breaking that putter during a t T11 finish at the Myrtle Beach Classic, Koepka was spotted testing out a couple of Scotty Cameron heads, similar to that of Cameron Young’s Phantom 9.5R with a full sightline at Aronimink Golf Club ahead of the PGA Championship.

It’s not the first time a Tour pro has asked to follow in Young’s footsteps. Justin Thomas had the same request last week at the Truist Championship. Why not follow the hot hand?

Koepka’s custom Cameron featured the same style Teryllium insert that he has used previously, most notably during his PGA wins, in a Newport-style blade. That putter did not make it into the bag, however, and instead a TaylorMade Spider Tour V with an extended L-Neck (plumbers) hosel to reduce toe-hang was deployed in Philadelphia.

Koepka ended the week at Aronimink 63rd in SG: Putting out of 82 players to make the cut.

Now at TPC Craig Ranch, Koepka is back using FastBack 1.5 equipped with a small slant neck to promote the face rotation he’s looking for. It’s a similar build to the one Koepka used at last year’s Irish Open.

Along with the new putter, Koepka shared that since his return to the PGA Tour, there are more equipment options than before, but as an equipment-free agent, he’s pleased with where his bag sits – minus the putter.

“Just more access to everything, I think, has been a huge advantage,” Koepka said. “I’m not going to do too much of that. I know I keep changing the putter pretty much every week now, but as far as the rest of the equipment that I have, I’m very satisfied with it. I’m very, very pleased with it.”

There is one club, though, that could make it into Koepka’s bag, but it might be a longer wait than expected.

“Maybe during the off-season start doing a little bit of testing just because all of these options now are out there,” Koepka added. “Like the mini driver, I haven’t even– I don’t want to say, but it’s kind of like – it feels like a PGA Tour club because I never saw it until maybe the end of last year. I watched guys hit it. It’s only out here. I haven’t seen many other guys use it.”

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

Published

on

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

In our forums, one user has offered up a prompt for the true sickos, inviting fellow forum members to share every set of irons they’ve ever owned. As to be expected, this is a lengthy forum topic.

@Lamosteve began:

Our members in the forum have been offering up their own collections. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • macedan: “Started with a hand-me-down Golden Bear set from my brother when I was in high school, never really played more than once a year or got into the game until about summer of 2017. First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year. Those lasted until spring of 18 when I decided I wanted new, so I traded them in for TM Rbladez. Honestly, although I liked the Rbladez, poor decision on my part, I think this was really about the only time so far that after a week or two I was kicking myself for not staying with what I had. Rbladez stayed with me until late last summer when I switched to P790’s and (knock on wood) I am hoping this will be my longest lasting set.”
  • JimmyC59: “MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Triple Crown. Palmer The Standard. Still play these.”
  • jgrzask: “Tommy Armour 845u
    Mizuno MP-32
