Fitting a 7-wood and 9-wood into your bag? – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing the merit of adding both a 7-wood and 9-wood to your setup. WRXer ‘naval2006’ kicks off the conversation saying:

“I’m currently using 4/5/6 hybrids and a strong 5. I use my 5 and 6h often at my home course and they are very easy to hit for me. A couple of my usual partners have got 7 and 9-woods. One of them is a fairly good player and he produces a lot of great shots with these sticks. He tells me they are addictive and so easy to hit that it’s like cheating.

My questions are:

What club do they replace? I think they’d be like a 4 and 5 hybrid or am I wrong?

Have you been using them for a while? How would they compare to the clubs you replaced?

I’ve been using hybrids for a very long time and I wouldn’t trade my 5h, but is there any room between this club and a 5-wood to place 7 and 9-woods?”

boggyman: “Trial and error has my bag at 4/7/9 woods after driver. Per a Ping chart, it recommends 4/7w then 5 hybrid at my 7 iron distance. 9 wood for me covers the 5 hybrid, but I can take a tad off to cover the distance or hit it normal. Added it a couple months ago. Used it today several times along with the 7 wood. My fairway woods are shorter than so called stock length which helps me tremendously. I’m thinking of a 6 hybrid after my 9 wood when I get irons soon.”
3006Sprng: “I play 5w,7w,5h, then 5i to Pw, I find that my 5h to my 7w (26-21) degree gap, is about 20 yards, which is perfect at the top of the bag. I replaced an 18 degree UT iron with the 7 wood and it’s amazing, never looked back. 7 wood for sure would replace a 4h in the low 20 degree loft range.”
stratgolf: “It’s very hard to tell you what they replace without data. 7 woods traditionally replace the 3 iron, but many find it replaces their 4 iron instead. 9 wood traditionally replaces 4 iron, but again many find it replaces their 5. When moving to woods, it is imperative you get the gapping correct. I have loved replacing hybrids with woods. They don’t turn over as much on me, and I find them so easy to launch and they’re terrific on mishits. Would reccommend.”

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year.
