Line ’em up: A look at putter alignment marks the RBC Heritage
Looking at putters on tour week to week and then seeing the variety in local play, I have been noticing something that is fairly unique to the player, which used to be uniform when it comes to being on the putting green. With the choice of what style of putter a player wants to use, we also see that choosing that alignment aid on the putter is just as unique. The great thing about golf is that your decision-making can be backed by science or by feel. Either decision, you know what is right for you. It goes the same for the players in tour golf as well.
No matter the putter with mallets or blades, alignment aids are something everyone can agree on; even if there is no alignment aid, it is still technically for alignment. What I have noticed more of is shorter sight lines on mallet putters, dots, and the use of vertical alignments in relation to the putter face. Let’s take a look at some of the options you see on the PGA Tour practice green.
Scotty Cameron
Taking a look at Scotty Cameron mallets, the Phantom line has expanded, and as we see here, more of the shorter alignment aids on top of the putter. Especially the Phantom 9.2 series. We see a more traditional alignment aid taking up the full length of the mallet putter on the Phantom 12. This also goes for Newport-style putters too, interesting to see the options for the shorter line on top line of the putter compared to the longer line in the back flange.

Odyssey
The Odyssey Square 2 Square series also features shorter alignment on the top of the putter. This is done because of the design of the putter with zero torque.

Looking at Odyssey’s Ai-Dual 1/2 Ball series, this blends Odyssey’s lineage of alignment in one putter. Part of the 2-Ball design, the short sightline, and the traditional longer alignment lines on the Odyssey 7. This is also seen with no additional alignment and just a 1/2 ball with no additional lines.

When it comes to the Jailbird, this new Ai-Dual series offers alignment in two directions, as you see fit. The putter has a short line on top, which visually banks on the vertical lines of the putter relative to the target. It is all about how your eye fits the putter.

Bettanardi
Bettanardi brings a look of tradition and the new age, with alignment achieved through short lines, longer lines across the back flange, sight lines, and sight dots.

TaylorMade
This week at the RBC Heritage, TaylorMade released the new line of Spider putters. Seen here is Tommy Fleetwood’s putter. The alignment is utilizing more a look vertical to the putter face with lines and a dot. In contrast to Fleetwood, Jason Day opts for no alignment aid on top of his Spider putter. Across its new putter models, TaylorMade offers alignment options.

L.A.B. Golf
L.A.B Golf is influential in the zero-torque movement and has also influenced many alignment options. Different styles vary from a single line to many. Chevron shapes to dots. L.A.B.’s options for colors of putters and alignment aids are all a part of the process for a player to choose their putter.

Putting is a game within a game, and all of these options for your putter can be comforting or dizzying. It is amazing to see the number of options today when it comes to putting. A certain putter model can be recreated and reimagined solely by the alignment aid. With the thousands of options of styles of putters and alignment options, it comes down to you. You will just know what fits, and if you don’t, there is no shortage for your next option.

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report
This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.
Joel Thelen
Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.
First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner
Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

- macedan: “Started with a hand-me-down Golden Bear set from my brother when I was in high school, never really played more than once a year or got into the game until about summer of 2017. First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year. Those lasted until spring of 18 when I decided I wanted new, so I traded them in for TM Rbladez. Honestly, although I liked the Rbladez, poor decision on my part, I think this was really about the only time so far that after a week or two I was kicking myself for not staying with what I had. Rbladez stayed with me until late last summer when I switched to P790’s and (knock on wood) I am hoping this will be my longest lasting set.”
- JimmyC59: “MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Triple Crown. Palmer The Standard. Still play these.”
