Playing a low loft hybrid with a higher loft fairway wood

In our forums, our members have been discussing the merits of playing a low loft hybrid along with a higher loft fairway wood. WRXer ‘chirpgolf’ pitches the potential setup, saying:

“Does anyone here play a low loft hybrid along with a higher loft FW? Currently play a GT2 3 hybrid cranked all the way down, so effectively a 2 hybrid, next club is 4i that I’m thinking of replacing with a 9 wood.

3 hybrid is essentially a safety club off the tee for me on short par 4s where my Dr & mini Dr would reach the hazard. 9 wood would be used for long par 3s and approaches into long par 4s/5s.”

Mr.peabody: “A low lofted hybrid and a high lofted fairway wood will typically have different ball flight characteristics. Like you said, the hybrid is an alternate tee club. The 9 wood should be a different animal. Its going to fly higher with more spin to stick greens. My 3 hybrid currently goes around 230 with a low/mid trajectory and low/mid spin. My 9 wood goes around 210 with a high trajectory and high spin.”
POKeefe: “Seems like a reasonable strategy to me. A 3H tuned down to 17* will play similarly to a 2i with more forgiveness (or how some play a mini driver). Then your next club would be a high lofted club for par 5s.”
stratgolf: “I find that idea a bit odd, and it’s certainly against conventional thinking, however if it works for your game, I don’t see an issue!”

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.
