Thriver vs mini driver

In our forums, our members havee been pitting the thriver and mini driver against each other. WRXer ‘RoyalMustang’ is ready to pull the trigger and add one to his bag, and kicks off the discussion saying:

“I’m about to pull the trigger on a thriver or mini driver. I have a nice G400 LST head (9 degree) laying around: would that work for a thriver or do I need more loft? Shaft a regular 43” or do I go shorter? Would there be any other advantage/disadvantage of going with a thriver vs. a mini?

I’m looking for 3W length, so 30 yards off my driver. And less rollout, especially in TX winters .I carried 290 yesterday and ended up with a 345 yard drive-that’s great on some holes, not so hot though when you want the ball to land and stop rolling. This time of year, on our hole that has water downhill at 300 and with dormant grass fairways, I have to hit 3H or even 4i to not risk an uncontolled rollout into the pond, but that would be my “thriver/mini” hole in summer conditions.”

RCCA: “I tried a Thriver in a G410 9* head at 43″ and couldn’t get the control I was looking for. IMO, you’re better off going to a higher spin head/shaft/loft combo, or you might as well just hitting a full length driver. I play my Thriver at 12″, but would love if Ping would release a 13 or 14* full sized G440 head.”
Nelson.br.15.15: “I think the Thriver setup depends on how you want to use it. I have my G425 driver at 9.5 & 45” set up to draw and be my “hit it as far as possible” club. I then have my G425 Thriver at 13.5 & 43.5” and set up to hit more of a fade-straightish spinnier ball and be my “this has to stay on the fairway” club. I also have a 11.5 & 44” G400 Max backup that does a little bit of both. I had an extra slot in my bag so the driver/thriver combo makes sense for me.”

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year. Those lasted until spring of 18 when I decided I wanted new, so I traded them in for TM Rbladez.
