WOTW: Hideki Matsuyama’s “Starbucks” Rolex Submariner
Hideki won the 2025 Hero World Challenge this weekend in his now-famous yellow polo. He was also wearing an almost as famous Rolex Submariner “Starbucks” on his wrist as he accepted his trophy from legend Tiger Woods. Hideki always wore a Rolex Submariner Bluesy until he got this watch shortly after winning the 2021 Masters Tournament.

Name: Rolex Submariner Date
Reference: 126610lv-0002
Limited: No
Date: 2020 – Current
Case: 904L Oystersteel
Bezel: Green Cerachrom Ceramic
Dial: Black
Size: 41mm
Movement: Calibre 3235, 31 Jewels
Power Reserve: 70 Hours
Glass: Sapphire Crystal
Waterproof: 300 Meters
Bracelet: 904L Oystersteel
Price: $11,200 (~$15,000)

Rolex updated the Submariner in 2020 with a slightly larger Oystersteel case, 1mm bigger than the previous generation, a change that immediately sparked controversy. Half of Submariner fans preferred the smaller, traditional case, while the other half wanted a larger size to compete with modern sports watches. Although the new case is larger, Rolex softened the edges and proportions to maintain the classic Submariner look.

The screw-down crown and caseback are crafted from Rolex’s own stainless-steel alloy, giving the watch its 300-meter water-resistance rating. Sitting on top of the case is a stainless-steel unidirectional bezel featuring a green Cerachrom insert. Cerachrom ceramic is extremely scratch-resistant, and its color won’t fade after long exposure to saltwater or UV rays. Rolex fans love nicknames, and this Submariner is widely referred to as the “Starbucks” thanks to its green bezel and black dial, which resemble the coffee brand’s logo. A related version, the Kermit, uses a lighter green bezel and predates the Starbucks by a few years.
The black dial features large white gold hour markers filled with Rolex’s Chromalight luminescent material. Chromalight glows a bright blue, offering excellent legibility underwater or in any low-light conditions.
Powering the new Submariner is an updated Calibre 3235 movement designed in-house by Rolex. This self-winding movement features Rolex’s Chronergy escapement for greater efficiency, along with a Parachrom hairspring, 31 jewels, and a 70-hour power reserve. Introduced in 2017, the 3235 is also found in the current Datejust, Sea-Dweller, and Deepsea models.

The Submariner’s bracelet is Rolex’s classic Oyster design, built from three flat solid-link pieces of Oystersteel for maximum durability. A folding Oysterlock safety clasp secures the bracelet and incorporates Rolex’s Glidelock extension system, allowing for tool-free micro-adjustments to achieve the perfect fit.
Rolex Submariners consistently hold their value and remain one of the safest investments in the watch world. The Starbucks variant is extremely popular and very difficult to source at an authorized dealer. Retail pricing is $11,200, but on the secondary market, a Submariner Starbucks in excellent condition currently sells for around $15,000.
