Why I ditched my mini driver

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been having an interesting discussion over mini drivers. It’s one of the biggest trending clubs currently in the game, but WRXer ‘vanderputts’ has decided to ditch his from the bag, kicking off the thread saying:

“After doing a ton of work on my driving this year, I’m finally putting the Mini Driver on the bench.

I started the season off doing a ton of testing with a Qi10 which resulted in great range experiences and numbers however it never really translated on the course. I had good and bad days were the Mini came in to relieve my driver but that hasn’t happened in a while now. After a recent switch to the Ping G430 10K Max with a Ventus TR 6X Blue – I’m hitting the ball off the tee better than ever. Straighter, longer, and with far far more consistent results.

That change and improvement also led me to entertain the 3w/4w spot in my bag which is now occupied by a Ping G430 3 wood 16* SFT playing at a slightly shorter 4 wood length. Its as long as the Mini and somewhat more versatile in being able to control flight a bit more.

Recently brought the Mini on a multi-round trip and with the new Driver & 3-wood – I barely ever used it which has caused me to reconsider. My driver was arguably my best club all week with my 3w not far behind.

The Mini before this had saved me in so many situations – both off the tee and into longer Par 5s – it was one of my favorite clubs in the bag for the past 2 years however I don’t really see a spot for it at the moment.

My ‘4w’ goes nearly as far now with a lot more versatility. Even bagged my first Eagle this year with the D -> 4W combo. If I need something lower flight, I’ll flight the 4-wood or start to carry my 2 iron again.

Curious if anyone else has found themselves in the same position and what the top of your bag looks like now.”

And our members have been reacting to the post and sharing their thoughts in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • lefty1978: “BRNR Mini is a weapon off the deck for me, gets me on in 2 on par 5s. I also use on 4 or 5 tee shots per round. Probably my favorite club. But if you’re not using it, you should replace it something else. I recently dropped my 62 because of that. No use wasting a valuable spot.”
  • PARETO: “My BRNR Mini has transformed my confidence off the tee this year. Once I took the time to figure out it’s preferred tee height, ball position and hosel setting, I stripe that thing and regularly out drive my mates who are all in Drivers. It’s firmly my primary tee club.”
  • happycamper515: “Have not missed a fairway in 54-holes now using my R7 Mini…I feel like Iron Byron. But 210Y is most golfers 4i so most of you guys could hit fairways pretty regularly if you were using a 4i from the tee every hole. I like the sound of the R7 and there is a lot less hook in the club than my previous driver even when I put the weights and adjust the hosel in the hook positions.”

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

Published

on

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

Our members in the forum have been offering up their own collections. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • macedan: “Started with a hand-me-down Golden Bear set from my brother when I was in high school, never really played more than once a year or got into the game until about summer of 2017. First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year. Those lasted until spring of 18 when I decided I wanted new, so I traded them in for TM Rbladez. Honestly, although I liked the Rbladez, poor decision on my part, I think this was really about the only time so far that after a week or two I was kicking myself for not staying with what I had. Rbladez stayed with me until late last summer when I switched to P790’s and (knock on wood) I am hoping this will be my longest lasting set.”
  • JimmyC59: “MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Triple Crown. Palmer The Standard. Still play these.”
  • jgrzask: “Tommy Armour 845u
