Hybrids that go high and don’t go left – GolfWRXers discuss

In our forums, our members have been discussing hybrids. WRXer ‘BEJRSFTA’ is on the hunt for a hybrid that goes high but doesn’t go left, and kicks off the thread saying:

“I’ve always wanted to make hybrids work as I transition out of long irons, but I’ve never been completely in love with any that I’ve found.

The G430 hybrids felt awesome and were very forgiving, but tended to play really low for me and I could occasionally get more left than I would like to see if I banged it out of the toe.

The Cobra King Tec is probably the closest thing I’ve found to what I’m looking for. With the weight in the toe I’ve yet to hit it left, and I usually hit a mid window which I’m happy enough with. My only minor nit with the King Tec is that it’s a bit bigger than hybrids I’ve played in the past, so it feels closer to a fairway wood in terms of size than what I’m used to. I like this club, but wouldn’t say I’m in love.

Ideally would like to get the performance of a King Tec with the feel and size / shape of the G430, but not sure that exists.

Any suggestions on what else to consider?”

Tyler724: “I play the G430 hybrid. I don’t have issues with it going left for me. Try the flat settings if you have not already. I do find the G430 a little lower flight than some other hybrids of similar loft (which I like), but I believe the G440 was supposed to launch a bit higher. Good luck.”
dmeeksDC: “You may need to build the club you seek. I copied this idea from a plus-handicap pro and I love it. Get a club marketed toward slower swingers who want more launch and modify it for your game. I bought a Callaway ai Smoke HL (high launch) hybrid and dumped the lightweight stock shaft in favor of a 90 gram Project X Evenflow black. I shortened it a bit too. They’re outstanding hybrids. They’re also adjustable, so you can get the flight you like. And it’s not huge. Perfect weapon, very versatile. One of my favorite clubs ever.”

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.

First purchased a set of Cleveland CG4’s (I actually really miss this set sometimes, soft & not terribly large for a GI iron), moved into Nike Vapor Fly’s by the end of the year.
