A Sunday for the ages: When golf wins, we all win

The dawn breaking over Augusta National this morning feels different. You can sense it. There’s a buzz in the air that only happens when something special is brewing. Rory and Bryson, walking side by side down those perfect fairways today? Man, that’s the stuff golf dreams are made of.

I’ve been thinking about this matchup since Bryson drained that monster putt on 18 yesterday. Rory chasing the slam after all these years of Augusta heartbreak. Bryson, the guy who completely tore down his swing, his body, his whole approach to the game, now standing on the edge of Masters immortality.

I’ll be honest – I can’t pick a side here. And I don’t want to.

Look, golf’s been through the wringer these past couple years. The whole LIV versus PGA Tour thing turned ugly fast. Suddenly we’re all supposed to choose teams? Players who were friends for decades stopped speaking to each other. Golf Twitter became a cesspool of tribal warfare. It’s been exhausting.

But today feels like a gift. A chance to remember what makes this game great.

I’ve got buddies who can’t stand Bryson – think he’s too brash, too different, too much. I get it. I wasn’t always a fan either. But watching him high-five kids after rounds, seeing him take real risks on the course, hearing him talk about the game with genuine passion… it’s hard not to appreciate what he brings to golf. The sport needs characters, and love him or hate him, the guy moves the needle.

And Rory? Come on. That swing alone should be in the Louvre. When he’s firing on all cylinders like yesterday – that eagle on 15 was RIDICULOUS – there’s nobody more thrilling to watch. His journey at Augusta has been filled with so many “almost” moments. The collapse in 2011. The close calls. The weekend charges that fell just short. The weight of the career slam has been hanging around his neck for a decade now.

In addition to writing about the game, I am a PGA coach of juniors at my core, always have been, and kids love Rory. That matters. Kids also love Bryson. That matters, too.

Here’s my take: why choose? Why not just enjoy witnessing greatness from two completely different players? One relying on feel and natural talent, the other on science and relentless innovation.

The real victory today would be a battle for the ages. A back-nine duel with both guys throwing haymakers. Clutch putts. Impossible recovery shots. The roars echoing through the pines.

I’m sitting here with my coffee, looking at my worn-out Masters mug, hoping we get the Sunday this tournament deserves. No manufactured rivalries. No taking sides. Just pure, beautiful golf at the highest level.

If you love this game – truly love it – then root for moments of brilliance from everyone in the field today. Root for sportsmanship when the pressure’s highest. Root for a finish they’ll still be talking about 50 years from now.

Because when golf is at its best, like it might be today, the game itself wins. And that’s something all of us – weekend hackers, club pros, tour junkies, and casual fans alike – can celebrate together.
