Chasing dreams: Rafael Campos’ journey to triumph on the PGA Tour
For those who pursue playing golf professionally, chasing that little white ball is more than just a game; it’s a passionate journey that requires steadfast dedication and incredible resilience. The road is filled with countless emotions for those aspiring to step onto the hallowed grounds of the PGA, DP World, or LPGA Tours. These hopefuls put their dreams on the line each year, yet only a few achieve that coveted place on tour.
Imagine dedicating countless hours on the range perfecting your swing, trying to wrestle with your mental game, and traveling across the country for tournaments—all while dealing with the pressure and uncertainty that comes with it. Many chasing the dream face considerable financial strain and long periods of anonymity, with cheap hotel rooms playing a replacement for home. Despite the hurdles, these dreamers press on, fueled by an unwavering love for the game. This journey is not just about talent because, at the very least, that is a shared trait of the many looking to make it. Ultimately, it comes down to a test of one’s character and determination. Heartbreaks and missed opportunities are all part of the pursuit and those who can push on despite that inch ever closer to their ultimate goal.
When success does come, it’s more than just about the win—it becomes a celebration of every early morning and late night practice and each sacrifice made along the way. Take Rafael Campos’s victory last week at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. That moment on Sunday, when the final putt dropped, encapsulated this journey beautifully. His story of resilience reminds those chasing the dream, one that sometimes seems impossible, that it is truly within reach with passion and perseverance.
Rafael Campos’s journey to his first PGA TOUR win is a story of perseverance, emotion, and national pride. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, Campos has long been a journeyman in the professional ranks for 14 years. His path was fraught with challenges, evident in his struggle during the 2024 season, marked by multiple missed cuts and battles with self-doubt. Yet, determination and unwavering self-belief led to this triumph in Bermuda.
This was a far from expected win for Campos. Coming into the week, his performance in 2024 offered little hope. He had missed four consecutive cuts and only saw the weekend twice in 15 events. Yet, somehow, someway, Campos defied the odds. His victory was more than just a win. It symbolized a lifetime of dedication, culminating in an emotional realization of his dreams coming true. As his final putt dropped, amidst tears and jubilation from his team, Campos knew his first win belonged not only to him but to everyone who supported his journey.
His victory resonated deeply with his family and many Puerto Rican fans. Just days after the birth of his daughter, the arrival of a new life mirrored the fulfillment of his dream. After his win, Campos expressed immense gratitude, stating that his victory was for his family, especially his newborn daughter, who inspired him during the tournament’s most challenging moments.
Campos’s victory ignited a sense of pride among Puerto Ricans. Puerto Rico, a vibrant nation with a rich sporting history, celebrated his win as a national triumph. Campos now stands alongside the legendary Chi Chi Rodriguez as a PGA TOUR champion, a distinction that resonates deeply with him, particularly after Chi Chi passed away earlier this year.
Campos’s victory was not just his own; it resonated deeply with fans of the game as well as his fellow playing professionals. It’s a powerful reminder that even in the face of overwhelming odds, dreams do come true for those who keep grinding it out. His journey inspires us all to chase our passions relentlessly and reminds us that a spirit of perseverance is essential in both professional golf and life itself.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience
This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.
I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.
With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.
Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
