Golf Gratitude: How celebrities and professional athletes stimulate golf growth, promote philanthropy
Golf in 2024 is more popular than it has ever been through its history, engaging millions of people from various demographics and cultural backgrounds. There has been a significant increase in participation numbers and rounds played, particularly due to a surge in new players during the pandemic and a growing younger demographic embracing the sport. Data from the National Golf Foundation and PGA Tour support this trend.
The game’s enthusiastic fan base also includes numerous celebrities and renowned athletes, such as Caitlin Clark, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, J.R. Smith, DJ Khaled, Justin Timberlake, Travis Kelce, Bill Murray, and Mark Wahlberg. These famous individuals find both solace and challenge in the game, significantly contributing to its popularity and growth while also supporting various charitable causes related to the sport.
A Positive Influence on Golf’s Growth
The involvement of such high-profile figures in golf significantly boosts the sport’s visibility and attractiveness. When celebrities publicly engage in golf, whether by participating in tournaments, sharing their experiences on social media, or being seen on the golf course, they introduce the game to a much broader audience. This visibility is crucial in dispelling the stereotype that golf is an elitist sport, inaccessible to the general public. Instead, it becomes more relatable and inviting, encouraging people from all walks of life to try their hand at it.
For instance, Steph Curry, known for his prowess on the basketball court, is also a passionate golfer. His participation in celebrity golf tournaments and his charismatic promotion of the sport have inspired many young fans to pick up golf clubs alongside basketballs. Similarly, Michael Jordan’s love for golf is legendary, and his steadfast devotion to the sport has cemented its association with competitive spirit and excellence.
Having celebrities endorse golf also increases economic opportunities within the sport. Their involvement can boost tourism in golf resorts, increase sales of golf equipment, and elevate the stakes in professional tournaments, contributing to the golf industry’s overall economic growth.
Spotlight: Golf for Good – Steph Curry’s UnderRated Golf
Steph Curry’s commitment to making golf more accessible and inclusive is evident in his initiative, UnderRated Golf. This program is designed to empower young golfers from underrepresented communities by providing them with opportunities, exposure, and mentorship. UnderRated Golf champions the idea that talent knows no bounds and seeks to break down the barriers that often prevent young, diverse athletes from pursuing golf at competitive levels.

The UnderRated Golf Tour aims to create access to premier golf experiences, allowing participants to play at some of the most esteemed golf courses in the United States. It brings together young golfers from various backgrounds, allowing them to compete and showcase their skills in a supportive environment. The program emphasizes personal development, education, and network building, equipping participants with tools that go well beyond their golfing proficiency.
Curry’s initiative not only fosters the next generation of golfers but also underscores the importance of diversity and inclusion within the sport. By bridging gaps in access and opportunity, UnderRated Golf sets a precedent for how philanthropy and sport can be intertwined to create lasting impacts on the community.
Philanthropy Through Golf
Many celebrity golfers extend their passion for the sport into philanthropic efforts, using golf as a platform to give back to the community. Celebrity-organized golf tournaments and events often serve as fundraisers for various charitable causes, including education, health, social justice, and community development.
For example, Justin Timberlake has hosted several charity golf events that merge his love for the game with his commitment to philanthropy. Through these events, Timberlake has raised significant funds for various causes, demonstrating that golf can be more than just a pastime; it can also be a powerful tool for meaningful change.

Similarly, Travis Kelce, a star on the football field, shares a deep passion for golf and has utilized the sport to support health and wellness initiatives through his foundation. By organizing golf outings, he not only promotes the sport but also raises awareness and funds for important community issues.
These philanthropic endeavors highlight golf’s ability to unite people for a common cause, showcasing its potential as a force for good in society. When celebrities use golf as a vehicle for charitable work, they emphasize the sport’s values of integrity, respect, and sportsmanship, inspiring others to think about how they can positively contribute to their communities.

Their Passion and Influence is Important
The passion for golf shared by celebrities and athletes like Caitlin Clark and Steph Curry transcends fame and fortune, showcasing the sport’s universal appeal. Their involvement is a powerful catalyst for growth, introducing golf to new audiences and breaking down historical barriers. Additionally, their philanthropic efforts through golf highlight how the game can have a positive impact beyond personal enjoyment, fostering community development. Ultimately, as these stars continue to play, promote, and give back through golf, they highlight the sport’s enduring significance and its ability to inspire and connect people worldwide.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience
This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.
I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.
With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.
Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
