It’s official: Jon Rahm signs with LIV Golf

Published

on

Jon Rahm’s rumored move to LIV Golf is no longer rumored. Appearing on FOX News today, the reigning Masters champion confirmed his move to the circuit.

“I am proud to join LIV Golf and be part of something new that is bringing growth to the sport,” said Rahm. “I have no doubt that this is a great opportunity for me and my family and am very excited for the future.”

Rahm gave the following reasoning behind the move to LIV Golf:

Every decision I feel like we make in life there will be somebody who agrees and likes it and somebody who doesn’t, right. I made this decision because I believe it’s the best for me and my family and everybody I’ve been able to talk to has been really supportive of me,” Rahm stated. “So I’m very comfortable with my decision. I’m no stranger to hearing some negative things on social media or in media. It’s part of what it is, we’re public figures but you just learn to deal with it right? This certainly won’t define who I am or change who I am.”

During the Zoom call on FOX, Rahm was asked directly about whether the money, speculated to be upwards of $500 million, was a motivation in his decision.

Rahm responded: “It’s one of the reasons. Yeah. I’m not going to say here I lied to you. It’s definitely one of the reasons.”

While speaking to David Feherty, Rahm went into more depth on the potential his move to LIV can have on growing the game of golf by reaching a “bigger audience.”

“I believe in the growth of the game of golf. I’ve largely spoken about how Seve improved the game of golf in Spain and I’ve always said how I would like to do the same thing over there. And if I can reach a bigger audience it would be amazing and I do believe this process will help me do that.”

Jon Rahm also expressed his desire to retain his status on the PGA Tour, saying via Golf Digest Australia:

“I can say that I do want to maintain my PGA Tour and DP World status. I will not give that up and hopefully with the freedom that LIV Golf gives me I can play in both of those tours as well. I’ve expressed how important the Spanish Open is to me in the past, and if we ever reached that point [to play in] certain PGA tour events, I still want to go and play as long as my schedule allows. So if possible, we’ll see what we can make happen.”

Following the announcement a thrilled LIV Golf Commissioner and CEO Greg Norman, said:

“When I first met Jon at the age of 17, I knew then that the golfing world was about to witness the birth of a new star. Jon has consistently validated that he is one of the top players in the world. He’s a generational talent who has proven his merit as a multiple major champion and tremendous ambassador for global golf by placing the game ahead of himself. There are very few athletes with his pedigree of talent, leadership, poise, and commitment to bringing progress to the sport on a worldwide stage. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Jon to the LIV Golf family as the league continues preparations for a huge 2024 and beyond.”

Lawrence Burian, LIV Golf Chief Operating Officer had this to say on the big move:

“LIV Golf is here to stay. The addition of Jon re-emphasises that our League is not slowing down. We are continuing to invest and build aggressively for LIV’s long-term and exciting future.”

Details on Rahm’s team will be announced later, and the Spaniard will compete at LIV Golf Mayakoba February 2-4.

Is anyone really surprised by this?? If the 600 Million was in fact the offer he got, that would be nigh on impossible to turn down. I mean, how often is someone going to offer you over half a billion dollars to play golf???? All I can say is…. don’t burn any bridges Jon cuz you never know, ……. ya know?

Every player has their choice and we can’t fault them for it. I dont know as a fan if PGA vs. LIV helps at all. Im personally very tired of it and would like to know how this helps affordability and access instead. Rather than deal with all this drama I think i’ll spend my time at the range or course.

The PGA is just about done. They did it to themselves.

I am happy for Jon Rahm and his family. The PGA loyalists not taking advantage is just outright stupid. All liv need is 18 team, 72 holes and game is on

Not as a big a loss as people are making it. Yes he’s a good player, but he fits the LIV model of everyone being a giant douchebag.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
