Good Tuesday morning, golf fans, as we gear up for the BMW Championship.

1. A Vu number one

Reuters report…”Two-time major champion Lilia Vu is the new No. 1 in the women’s world golf rankings.”

  • “She rose from No. 6 in the latest rankings, released Monday, after her victory Sunday at the AIG Women’s Open.”
  • “Vu, a 25-year-old from California, overtook Nelly Korda, who dropped to No. 2. This is the first time in rankings history that Americans have been No. 1 and No. 2.”
Full piece.

2. Glover: Pick me

Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard…”With just one week remaining in automatic qualifying for this year’s U.S. Ryder Cup team, it’s likely that captain Zach Johnson’s focus is beginning to narrow. But on Sunday at the first FedExCup playoff stop, Lucas Glover gave the captain something to think about…”

  • “Right now, yes,” Glover said when asked if he would pick himself for the U.S. team. “Playing pretty good golf, and I think I’d be pretty good in the team room and be a good partner, so yeah, absolutely, I would.”
Full piece.

3. Westwood ripped

Our Matt Vincenzi…”Early this morning, Eddie Pepperell went off on Twitter after LIV Golfer Lee Westwood replied to the updated OWGR with a laughing emoji.”

  • “Westwood was clearly indicating he disagreed with the current rankings due to the fact that LIV players do not receive any OWGR points for their tournaments.”
  • “Pepperell replied to the tweet, saying “I’ll tell you what’s a joke Lee; you earning 3X the average annual UK salary in one week for shooting +20 over 3 rounds.”
Full piece.

4. “What a bunch of idiots”

Our Matt Vincenzi…”The R&A issued a statement after the round, thanking the police for their quick response.”

  • “Protesters were quickly apprehended on the 17th green during the final group and five arrests were made by the police. We would like to thank the police and marshals for their vigilance and the players and spectators for their understanding.”
  • The protest group “Money Rebellion” took responsibility for the disturbance.
  • After the round, Charley Hull, who was in contention for the championship spoke to The Telegraph about the protestors.
  • “What a bunch of idiots,” the 27-year-old said.
  • “I suffer from asthma but didn’t have my inhaler on me and that stuff was really thick, so no it was not nice. I wasn’t scared when it happened, just thought they were idiots. Someone said they are protesting about oil, but how did they get here today? Drove probably.”
Full piece.

5. Varner: It’s harder to win on LIV

Our Matt Vincenzi… “In an interview with Golfweek, Harold Varner III shared his opinion that winning on LIV was more difficult than winning on the PGA Tour.”

  • “That LIV’s not serious. I think it’s harder to win $4 million than it is to win a PGA Tour event. When you get in contention out here, it’s like, (expletive), that’s life-changing money. And I play for money.”
  • “Varner III has been open in the past about the life-changing money that LIV has given him and has been incredibly honest about why he decided to join.”
  • “In the interview, he reiterated that he didn’t join LIV to “grow the game” when he was asked if he received any blowback from fellow LIV players about his previous comments.”
Full piece.

6. Wadkins on Mickelson allegations

Joseph McMahon…”When asked about the gambling allegations, Wadkins, the 1977 PGA championship winner, told Lynch exactly what he thought about ‘Lefty’:

  • “I don’t know that there’s ever been a more disappointing figure in golf than Phil Mickelson,” he said. ”He was a beloved figure for a long time, we all marveled at the way he could play. But, just nothing looks kosher about what he’s doing these days.”
  • Wadkins was referring to Mickelson’s decision to leave the PGA for the Saudi-backed LIV Golf tour and his gambling problem. “He’s blown a chance to probably be a Ryder Cup captain.” Watkins said. “I think he probably would have been a two-time captain. Now he’s not going to be involved. It’s really kind of a shame. He has self imploded. It looks like he just continues to at every turn. It’s disappointing and sad. It’s sad that we have people in our game who think they’re bigger than the game. And obviously, Phil thinks he’s bigger.”
Full piece.

7. Hull vows to get working

Mike Hall for Golf Monthly…”Despite finishing six shots behind Vu, who claimed her second Major title of the year, the result appears to have offered Hull plenty of encouragement that she’s not far away from winning one of the year’s five big events.”

  • “In interview on Sky Sports after her challenge, she explained that she’s prepared to do whatever is necessary to ensure 2024 finally brings her a Major title. She said: “Truthfully, I want to be with my coach tomorrow at 10 o’clock in the morning and I just want to work on a load of stuff because I feel like I’ve come second twice this year now and in probably the two biggest Majors.”
  • “I really feel like next year’s my time to win one and I just want to get started as soon as possible and just get working and make my hands bleed. I want to hit that many golf balls.”
Full piece.

8. US to have 3 rookies and one veteran for Pan-Am games

Alex Miceli for SI…”The United States will have three rookies and one veteran on its four-person 2023 Pan American Games golf team that will compete at the Prince of Wales Country Club in Santiago, Chile, in November, Sports Illustrated has learned.”

  • “The U.S. team will officially be announced later this month and will be comprised of 2019 mixed team gold medalist Stewart Hagestad, U.S. Women’s Amateur champion Megan Schofill, plus Anna Davis, the 2022 Augusta National Women’s Amateur champion, and Dylan Menante, a fifth-year senior from the University of North Carolina.”
Full piece.

Most birdies without breaking par – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, one user is wondering how many birdies other players have had in a round while still failing to break par. @Lalan45, unfortunately, asked the question after a unique experience of their own.

They wrote:

“Today I managed 8 birdies but still shot even par, could have been a round to remember! What’s the most birdies you’ve made in a round and still didn’t break par?”

Our members in the forum shared their own experiences with successful rounds that still resulted in a score over par. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • kwcsports: “I’ve had 5 a few times, still shot 80+ haha.”
  • jda: “I played a course for the first time, had 8 birdies, 9 doubles and an eagle. The infamous no-par round. I kept the scorecard. Every shot had a creek that I did not know about, or I was within 8-10 feet for a birdie look. To this day, I have no idea if I should be really jacked up or mad about that performance.”
  • jvincent: “I think my record is either 5 or 6. Probably shot 75.”
  • Instron4204: “3 birdies and shot a 92…man I suck!”

Best current stock shaft 2026 – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, one user is asking for thoughts on the best stock shafts offered in 2026. Stock shafts are the shafts included with a club when it’s purchased from retailers or OEMs.

@DTorres asked:

The last couple years has seen a lot of updates and additions to no upcharge stock shafts, which do you think is the best offering in 2026?

Im a bit of a shaft nerd and recently during my Members Testing with the Callaway Quantum Triple Diamond I found the updated Project X Denali Frost Black to be a fantastic stock shaft. I absolutely did not mesh well with the original Denali. Just curious what other people think are the current best Stock shaft offerings out with new models and stock Ventus options and LinQ options popping up here and there.

We were given the option for any stock shafts for our members review. I went with the 70g Black Frost 6.5 because it’s a shaft I don’t have, it’s an updated version of the original Denali and hear little about. I typically use a Diamana WB, GD VF or a HOF Raptor. I’m not saying it was neck and neck with any of those but it was a pleasant surprise I’m not accustomed to in stock shaft offerings.

Our members in the forum have been offering up their own thoughts on the best stock shafts available in 2026. Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • rsballer10: “IMO – MCA Ka’ili White Darkwave, Tensei 1k Black/white, UST Lin-Q White. People are free to spend their money however they see fit, but for me personally the shaft catalogs these days have enough options that I don’t see the value of a $400 upcharge. I have never had a problem finding a no upcharge shaft that fits the bend profile and weight that I need. Whether the paint job is good enough or not is above my pay scale.”
  • bcflyguy1: “Project X Titan Black. I’ve had one in 60TX in my Quantum TD Max for several weeks now. Have to give Titlieist their flowers for finding a way to make it available as a featured option; very shrewd bit of business and one that I suspect will be duplicated by the other companies. TT/PX have a certified banger on their hands with Titan.”
  • CTG77: “Undoubtedly, it’s the Tensei 1K RIP shafts from Titleist. The Tensei line gives about 98% of the performance of a Ventus VeloCore+ shaft at a tiny fraction of the cost if you’re looking for a blue or red profile. The white is not an exact match for Ventus Black, but it’s closer to it than the non-VeloCore+ Ventus shafts that come from Callaway or formerly came from TaylorMade.”
