WOTW: Rory McIlroy’s Omega DeVille Hour Vision Co-Axial Chronograph

on

Rory McIlroy was able to finish his round with two impressive birdies to win the Genesis Scottish Open this weekend. This was McIlroy’s second win of the season, and his final-round 68 was enough for a one-shot victory over Robert MacIntyre. While receiving the silver trophy, Rory was wearing an Omega DeVille Hour Vision Chronograph in Red Gold on his wrist.

Founded in 1848 by Louis Brandt in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, Omega watches have a long and respected history. Omega’s reputation soared as the official timekeeper for the Olympic Games since 1932 and the choice of NASA for its manned space missions, earning it the title of the “Moonwatch” after the Speedmaster was worn during the moon landing in 1969. The De Ville collection was initially created in the 1960s to showcase Omega’s elegance and refined watchmaking expertise with classic and sophisticated designs. Omega has continued to innovate and expand the De Ville collection with modern iterations, combining timeless design with modern materials and movements.

Rory has worn a few DeVille models over the years, including a $144,000 Tourbillon, but this is the first time I can recall seeing him in this Hour Vision Chronograph. The Hour Vision line was brought to life in order to display Omega’s high-level craftsmanship with “simplicity and sophistication.” Each piece is also fitted with high precision movements that are certified as Master Chronometers. Released in 2012 the DeVille Hour Vision Chronograph has a 42mm case made from solid 18k Red Gold. Omega’s Red Gold adds copper and silver to the alloy in order to make the precious metal more durable and to achieve the reddish hue.

On the right side of the case is the screw down crown and twin pushers that run the chronograph, all crafted in matching Red Gold. A Red Gold caseback, with large display window, is fastened to the case with 4 Red Gold screws to give the watch an impressive 100 meter water resistance rating. A deep blue dial contains Red Gold Roman numeral hour markers and matching stick hands. A sweeping seconds hand is located in the subdial at 9 o’clock while the other is a bit unique, containing two hands for 60-minute and 12-hour counters. You don’t typically see a subdial with multiple hands. Omega keeps the date window down at 6 o’clock and covers the whole dial with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

Omega’s Calibre 9301 is one of the most advanced movements they were making in 2012 and is still very impressive today. Interestingly, the 9301 is actually a 9300 movement, but made for gold watches. The big difference is Omega uses a Red Gold rotor and bridge it give it a more luxurious look and feel. Twin barrels are used by Omega to not only increase the power reserve to 60 hours but to also to use the power in a more reliable and efficient way. This allows the 9301 to not lose accuracy as the stored spring energy gets low. A non-magnetic Si14 silicon balance spring is used in order to resist the influence of magnetic fields on the accuracy of the watch. And the main attraction of the 9301 is the Co-Axial escapement that eliminates sliding friction for added durability and less need for service. Invented by George Daniels in 1974, the Co-Axial escapement was first mass produced in 1999 by Omega.

The DeVille Hour Vision Chronograph is finished off with a beautiful blue alligator leather strap. The underside of the strap is made from soft non-grained calf leather and stuck together. A Red Gold foldover clasp brings the strap together and matches the case for a dressier and classic look. Omega watches are very up and coming with collectors adding more and more of them to their collections. Made in 2012, this DeVille Hour Vision is listed as no longer on Omega’s website. You can still find one on the secondary market and one in good condition will run you about $16,000 today.
