‘He likes to prove people wrong’ – Rory on potential Tiger return at the Masters

Published

on

Yesterday, Golf WRX reported on Tiger Woods’ visit to Augusta, his full 18-hole round, and a source commenting, “I think he plays. The cardinal sin would be to be surprised by anything he does. He’s not going to [Augusta] just to be seen.”

And the golf world predictably went a bit crazy with comments ranging from the concerned to the hopeful.

Reader Greg McNeil replied to the column with, “…as a fan, I don’t want to see him struggle at Augusta because he’s not physically ready. He’s always said that he won’t play if he doesn’t think he can win. I hope he sticks to that.”

From the other side, Dan W. was more than optimistic:  “Let the Hogan comparisons begin!”

Whatever the feelings, golf fans are rightly excited as the days pass without a negative comment from Team Woods, and the odds about his participation at the 2022 Masters shorten by the day.

Then came Rory McIlroy.

If fans were looking forward to what, even three months ago, seemed highly unlikely, Rory McIlroy seems just as thrilled.

On the Thursday of The Players Championship, Rory summed up his feelings about Tiger with a simple sentence:

“Tiger’s left more of a mark on this game, I think, than anyone else basically in the history.

So, what of the possibility of his hero and inspiration appearing on the hallowed fairways alongside him?

Before this week’s Valero Open in Texas, the four-time major champion made his thoughts clear:

“I think for golf and for the Masters tournament and for everyone, to have Tiger there would be phenomenal. I think it just adds to the event. Obviously, it does. Anything Tiger Woods does in the game of golf is heightened whenever he’s there. I mean, it would be awesome for him to be there. You know, he was there yesterday, obviously, and he’s trying to see what he can do. Obviously, no one knows but him if he can make it around and think, you know, if he believes he can compete.”

Rory continued to eulogise about the five-time Masters winner: “I’ve said this so many times, but from basically March of 2017, fast forward two years and he wins the Masters, and where he was with his body and what he had to do to get back to being somewhat healthy. And it’s not even being somewhat healthy, it’s also what he has to do before the round and after the round just to get himself ready to go and play golf. Yeah, the sheer will and perseverance, yeah, it is incredible.“

At the Genesis Invitational, Tiger said he had a “long way to go” and that he was “still working on the walking part.”

Such a turnaround in just a matter of weeks would be incredible, but as Rory says:

“If he comes back from this again – he likes to prove people wrong. He likes to prove himself wrong, I think. Regardless of when he does come back, he’s a wonderful addition to the game, and the game of golf is better when he’s playing and when he’s playing well.”

I don’t know who he’s talking about, I don’t know Tiger Woods and he doesn’t have to prove anything to me. Frankly, I don’t care.

He’ll play, probably fairly well, and you’ll come back with a different name saying “I told ya so”. Move along buzzard.

He won’t play and if he does he won’t make the weekend and will withdraw with some pill popping excuse.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
