2021 GolfWRX Holiday Gift Guide: Golf gifts for the Purist
It’s that time of year again, GolfWRX members, the moment we start filling our wish lists with the golf gear we want this holiday season.
The GolfWRX Holiday Gift Guide was created to ensure that our readers give (and hopefully receive) the very best golf gifts on the planet. These gift ideas will suit any budget, and each item was hand-picked by our staff.
In an effort to provide more value and tailored recommendations, we’re targeting “the purist,” “the gearhead,” “the value seeker,” “the golfer looking to get better,” “the clothes horse,” and “the big spender.”
You know the purist by his/her love forged irons, natural fibers, and Golden Age golf courses.
Here are our best recommendations for “the purist” in your life.
The Making of Pacific Dunes by Tom Doak – $50

In The Making of Pacific Dunes, Doak shares his experience in building the second course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Doak recounts his journey from the first day, explaining how he found each hole and put the routing together, and what his crew did and didn’t do to build this “distractingly beautiful and unfailingly challenging golf course.”
Artisan Wedges – $300 each

As seen in the bag of the likes of Abraham Ancer on tour, Artisan wedges are handcrafted to fit the profile of each individual and are a must-have for all golf purists.
Wedges start at $300 each for a Satin raw finish, standard Dynamic Gold shaft and standard Tour Velvet grip, with a trip to Texas required for the fitting process which includes a morning or afternoon hitting balls with the Artisan team so that they can understand your short game in order to truly customize each wedge to your game.
Titleist Pro V1, Pro V1x: $49.95

The No. 1 ball in golf, yes. Most widely played on the PGA Tour by a wide margin, yes — no doubt the performance of the Titleist Pro V1 is best-in-class. But for the purist, there’s nothing in the golf ball space quite so iconic as the “Titleist” script stamped on the Pro V1.
Fore Ewe Headcover – $55

Purists will love For Ewe’s headcovers, which are all made from start to finish in Portland, Oregon using 100 percent wool yarn. All of the yarn is spun and double waxed to ensure that it knits smoothly and lasts, while each cone is skein dyed to make sure the colors are rich and consistent.
This holiday-themed set features a charcoal, dark red, and white color scheme with the covers starting from $55.
8″ Leather Mac Mackenzie Bag – $1,055

No purists collection is complete without a Mackenzie bag. The 8″ Leather Mac is made from navy leather, trimmed in red and white leather. The bag features a white & red split bottom and has an 8” opening with just the solo pocket.
The Golfer’s Journal: $75/year

Do you subscribe to The Golfer’s Journal? If you consider yourself a purist, it’s surprising if you don’t. And if you’re buying a gift for the purist in your life, TGJ is the perfect pick for superb reading material, best-in-the-golf-media photography, and of course, as a coffee table adornment that signals your aesthetic sensibilities are as high as your appreciation for our maddening game.
National Custom Works custom forged irons – Varies

Hand-ground from Japanese forgings by the legendary Don White, NCW’s entirely made-to-order blades have quickly become the purist’s gold — or steel — standard. And they’re not just for show; these things perform, as evidenced by Jason Dufner putting a set in play in 2018.

TaylorMade MySpider Tour and Tour X: More customizable build options now available
TaylorMade Golf’s MySpider program underwent a substantial overhaul over the last month. Firstly, the company launched the option to customize the Spider ZT model, and now the program has returned with the MySpider Tour and MySpider Tour X.
The revamped page now gives golfers complete control over every visual and functional detail of their putter on the popular Tour and Tour X head, with every cosmetic idea thought of. In MySpider Tour, golfers can choose from four head finishes, 16 paint fill colors, nine Surlyn face insert colors, three aluminum insert options, six sightline configurations, and four hosel options — L-neck, small slant, double bend, center shaft. Six sightline options are available in MySpider Tour, including the optically engineered True Path alignment system. MySpider Tour X gives builders the option of four head finishes, four hosel configurations, and five sightline options, also including True Path alignment.
One of the more interesting features of the new MySpider program is the availability of three distinct face insert options. Along with the usual Surlyn Pure Roll insert trusted by Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, which can be customized from nine colors, golfers can now also select firmer options. Two are offered with the black aluminum Pure Roll insert, slightly firmer than the traditional insert, or for the firmest feel, golfers can choose from two colors of milled aluminum inserts.

Another fun addition to the MySpider Tour is the ability to use the “Tommy Sightline.” The custom alignment aid design, which was first drawn onto Tommy Fleetwood’s putter by PGA Tour Rep James Holley, is based on the milled sightline on his Spider ZT head. There are five shorter lines on the left and right of a longer central line serving as the traditional short line alignment aid.
