2020 Olympic golf course finally agrees to admit women as full members

Pressured to change its policies by the International Olympic Committee, Kasumigaseki Country Club, host of golf at the 2020 Summer Olympics, has agreed to admit three women as full members.

The club currently has ~200 female “associate members,” who weren’t allowed to play on Sundays. The board announced its decision this week to overturn that 40-year-old policy after a unanimous vote (which followed an earlier vote that failed).

The club is in Saitama prefecture, northwest of downtown Tokyo. In January of 2017, when Tokyo Gov. Yuriko Koike said, “I feel very uncomfortable about women not being able to become a regular member in this era,” which brought the club unwanted national attention and pressure to change its policies.

“It always understood it would have to be gender equal,” IOC Vice President John Coates said of Kasumigaseki in early 2017, suggesting the club needed to change its policies or the competition would be moving elsewhere.

Interestingly, Kasumigaseki is the same club that President Donald Trump played with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe last November.

  Try going into a women’s only gym that’s part of a national chain of co-ed gyms and see what happens. I quit my national chain gym when they opened up a brand new, state of the art gym here many years ago, and I found out it was for women only. I emailed them asking why my dues were being used to build gyms that I couldn’t use. Their response was that women paid dues as well. My reponse was that I paid the same dues and yet they can use any gym in the country and I can’t and the most modern, state of the art facility in my town I couldn’t get into. I asked for a discount, didn’t get it and quit, and joined a local independent gym.
