The Circus Come to Town

The circus is in town, with Michelle Wie overshadowing even a Major Championship, John Daly and his wife getting catty with one another, and Colin Montgomery giving his caddy the old heave-ho.
What happened to the golf? Nobody seems to remember Lorena Ochoa gave up a 4 shot lead and was defeated by Nicole Castrale last week at Annika’s tournament. Golf has apparently gotten to be more reality show than sporting event. Something detrimental to everyone involved.

I’m not sure how I got caught up in it but the Circus came to golfdom last week with a single tent, and has expanded to three rings this week removing the focus from some marvelous, and not so marvelous golf.

First MIchelle Wie overshawdowed even a major, then John Daly shows up with claw marks on his face, and now Colin Montgomery and his caddy split again just before the US Open.

Why do I feel like I’m watching the Soap Channel instead of professional atheletics?  Oh, right, because I haven’t heard much about good golf shots and heated competition over the last 2 weeks.  Is this what the golf world has come to? On weeks when Tiger doesn’t play we’re inundated with fluff disquised as news instead of golf as played by the best players in the world.  Apparently mainstream media schlock has intruded onto my sports pages.  Quick, who won the Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika?  Give yourself a gold star if you knew the answer is Nicole Castrale.

I’m guilty also, after all I’ve written about all of this more than I should have to the exclusion of the golf.  Silly me.  But I’ve always been fascinated by the circus with its thrills and chills, freaks and geeks, exotic animals and high flying risk takers.  I will also pay attention to see if Ms. Wie shows up to play the last round of the LPGA McDonalds or decides that last place is secure and perhaps she should go back and rehab that (those) wrist(s).  I won’t care how the latest John Daly saga unfolds because I lost interest in Mr. Daly about the time of his Golf Channel show.  As for Mr. Montgomery and his long time caddy splitting again, well it is after all Montie and not getting on with folks seems to be ordinary behavior for him.

I anticipate the coming test Oakmont will provide US Open participants and I will watch the LPGA McDonald’s because it is a major and I’m a fan of women’s golf.  Hopefully I’ll get to focus on the golf and not the circus.

A reminder from your friends at GolfWRX: Father’s Day is June 21. And as we do every year, we’re rounding up the best gifts for dad.

As we say every year, there’s no better golf-related Father’s Day gift than a round of golf with pops. Be it a country club or your favorite muni, take the time to get together to play 18 if you can.

Let’s get to the gifts.

We like the new polos that Ghost is offering, as the fabric and fit are so good. These new Qualifier Collection polos breathe well, are lightweight, stretch with your swing, and of course look great. You can wear them on the course, in the office, or just out at a casual event and they will fit right in.

When it comes to practice, it is good to have a purpose. This “Putting Thing” sure does it. We know from personal experience how challenging it can be and how rewarding it is on the practice green. This also provides some competition for your kiddo to see who will unload the dishwasher or do the next chore around the house.
