4 Young Guns Ready to Make Some Noise in Vegas

Published

on

The PGA Tour’s “wraparound” events are a time for the young guns to make some noise on the big Tour. Who might we be hearing from this week in Vegas at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open? Don’t be surprised if it’s a player from a foursome that headed out together on Tuesday for a mid-morning practice round at TPC Summerlin.

First off the tee was J.J. Spaun (WITB). The 26-year-old Tour rookie finished third on last season’s Web.com Tour money list, and recently made Golf’s list of 15 members of “The New Class” to watch in 2016-2017.

Twenty-three-year old Brian Campbell (WITB) is one of Spaun’s New Class-mates. He was one of the trio that survived a seven-man playoff to grab the final spots in Monday qualifying. Campbell was T50 at Safeway Open a couple of weeks ago, earning his first Tour check.

Kurt Kitayama carded a nine-birdie, no-bogey 63 to lead the Monday qualifiers. If you’re looking for a young hometown-favorite/longshot, he’s your man: a 2015 UNLV grad, Kitayama will be making his PGA Tour debut a short drive from campus at the Shriners.

Rounding out the group, the guy with one of the coolest Tour names: Xander Schauffele. Just turned 23 last week, Schauffele has already gotten off to a smoking-hot start in the Fall Series, following up a T60 at Safeway with a T5 at last week’s Sanderson Farms Championship.

Thomas Meagher is a Pushcart Prize-winning writer who learned the game on the East Coast and now plays the desert courses of the West. He writes on golf and books and whatever else at MeglerOnTee.com.

Judging from that lead photo, Alexander won’t be around for long if he keeps putting pressure on his lower back. That’s a Mike Reid-esque reverse C if I’ve ever seen one.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

Published

on

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
