Wagner Leads by Two Through One

Johnson Wagner jumped out to an early two stroke lead at the historic Colonial Country Club on Thursday. He fired an seven under par 63 and Phil Mickelson and Brett Wetterich shot matching 65’s to trail tied for second.

"It was pretty gusty all day. It wasn’t the hardest wind I ever played in. A lot of crosswind. This course is set up so well to play with a ton of wind." said Wagner.

Phil Mickelson scored just one bogey for a 32 on the front nine and a 33 on the back on the par 70 layout. "Its always nice to end with a birdie … It was a good round. I ended up playing well and I thought the course was a very fair setup under some difficult conditions." Of the top five top ten players in the field by rank, Mickelson was the only player to break par.

Johnson Wagner has made cuts in just 7 of 14 events he has played on tour this year. However, one of those cuts was a win at the Shell Houston Open, played about 250 miles away from Fort Worth. "I think I made a double a couple of weeks after Houston. I kind of laughed it off and birdied a couple of holes after it. At the beginning of the year, I would have gotten real frustrated and down, let a bogey or a double turn into four or five bad holes in a row before I collected myself. (Now) I’m just having more fun. There is not the pressure to play well immediately. Now I can go out and focus on winning.”

"You know, I’m playing so nicely right now, I want to go out and do the same things,” he said. "If I don’t make as many putts, whatever, it’s just Thursday. If it was a Saturday 63, and I find myself leading by one, it would be hard. Going out Friday should just be the same thing.”

Wagner knows that he needs to have a very good showing to make it to the rest of the majors this year. His win in Houston got him down the fairways at Augusta, and he would like to see the other three. He needs to move 24 spots to make it into the top 10 on the money list, or he needs to move 70 spots in the world rankings by Monday to make it to Torrey Pines in June.

Johnson Wagner also shot an opening round 63 in Houston. Coincidence? We shall see.
