Phil Mickelson tests new driver shafts at Tour Championship, makes switch

Published

on

In a decision that could either be categorized as “classic Phil” or “ultimate teammate,” Phil Mickelson tested new drivers at the Tour Championship this week in preparation for next week’s Ryder Cup at 7,600-plus-yard Hazeltine.

WRXer Tomed actually spotted Mickelson, coach Andrew Getson, and a team of Callaway reps working with a number of drivers on the range Wednesday and put together an excellent forum post with his observations.

Reportedly, Mickelson used one of the configurations he worked with on Wednesday during his opening round, where he hit just one of 14 fairways. Not surprisingly, he put the second candidate in play with a much shorter shaft for his second round and did a bit better, finding the short grass five times. Mickelson hit eight of 14 fairways in his third round and six fairways Sunday. He found 35 percent of fairways for the week.

The left-hander had been playing an 8.5-degree Callaway XR 16 Sub Zero with a 45.5 inch Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki J 60X shaft (tipped one inch) for much of the season.

Per Callaway, here are the specs of the driver Mickelson settled on:

  • Driver: Great Big Bertha (8.5*)
  • Shaft: True Temper Project X 6.5 HZRDS T1100
  • Length: Cut to 44 7/8 inches

The five-time major champion explained his thinking on the heels of last week’s practice round at the Ryder Cup venue.

“When I went to Hazeltine and saw how long of a golf course it was, I went to a longer driver again. I hit this driver 18, 20 yards longer. That’s a significant difference. I carry it a lot farther, and I think it’s going to be an advantage at Hazeltine if I drive it well.

“But I needed to get some play with it. I can’t just show up and expect to drive it. Yesterday [Thursday] was a different one. Today [Friday] was the one I’m going to end up going with. I drove it great on the back nine. I hit cuts like I did in 2004, when I drove it well, and they were soft cuts. I was able to swing it to the target, and the ball went there. It was great.”

He averaged better than 302 yards off the tee this week, better than his 294.4-yard average this season.

Lefty has settled on his weapon of choice when the U.S. squad heads into battle next week, we’ll see how it serves him.

“I’ve won two Tour Championships, and I’ve only been a part of two winning Ryder Cups. I’d kind of like to be a part of a third. So not to diminish this [tournament], but I’d rather win next week. For me, at this stage in my career, it means a little more to me.”

Unfortunately, he still won’t hit a fairway

I’m confused, his quote says he went longer but the specs posted are shorter. How long was the driver he was playing all year? 44″?

36% of fairways hit with an 8 yard gain.

Keep hitting those “baby cuts” Phil, you won’t find a Ryder Cup in the trees.

The longer shaft clearly worked well this week.
