Immelman and Rose Lead After One

Justin Rose and Trevor Immelman shot 4 under 68’s to lead The Masters through one round.

Through the end of round one, The Masters has a decidedly international feel. South African Trevor Immelman and Englishman Justin Rose both shot 4 under 68.

Justin Rose played early in the morning and carded six birdies, including four in a row, and two bogeys. Immelman spaced his four birdies evenly over his round. Trevor Immelman said after the round, "I feel great. It’s a fantastic day out there. We had great weather and obviously it was nice for me to get out there and hit some good shots and make a few putts…it was just kind of low stress, really, and I did nothing too crazy to get me too upset. And I managed to hole a few birdie putts to keep the round going."

Returning champion Zach Johnson kept his roll at Augusta by posting a round of two under 70. When asked about it after the round, Johnson could hardly contain himself talking about the Champion’s Dinner. "I remember sitting down and I’m like, wow, I’m sitting at the head of the table with, obviously, Chairman Payne to my left and Mr. Ben Crenshaw to my right and I’m at the center and I’m thinking, wow, I can be here as long as I want to be here."

Johnson also had a very appetizing menu. "I served some Midwest corn-fed beef, filet, ahi tuna if they elected to go elsewhere. I had a corn casserole, pudding, whatever you want to call it, souffle, I don’t know what it was, but it was awesome. Some vegetables and then some salads and appetizers and that sort of thing. So there was an assortment. Some Florida flair with some Midwest home cooking."

Lurking four shots back after an even par round is World Number One. Tiger Woods was unable to card any birdies, but an eagle and two bogeys made for a decent day at Augusta. Everyone remembers in 1997 when Woods shot 40 on Thursday’s front nine and then went on to steam roll the competition. Woods doesn’t think that is going to happen again this year.

"The way the golf course plays now, you don’t really shoot low rounds here anymore. You’ve just got to plod along. It’s playing more of a U.S. Open than it is a Masters. I mean, there’s really only one roar I heard all day, and that was Poultie’s eagle. But other than that, it was really quiet."

Justin Rose reflected upon his round with a fair course assessment that give insight into what to expect through the weekend.

"I think the golf course is right where they want it. They can take it whichever direction they would like. If they want to create some more birdies, they can do that and if they want to make par a good score, that could be done, so I think it’s probably perfect right now."

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
