Ogilvy Wins Kapalua Again

What is it with Australians and Kapalua? Geoff Ogilvy won his second consecutive tournament to become the first back to back winner since Stuart Appleby. “I like the golf course, I think it’s fair to say,” Mr. Ogilvy understated accurately. If you shoot 8 rounds under 70 over two years, I think winning would be a distinct possibility.

This time the champion had to rally from a two shot deficit over the last 10 holes, rather than winning by six shots. With Rory Sabbatini running off 5 birdies in a row en route to a 63, Mr. Ogilvy carved out a 67 for a one shot win.

With the victory Mr. Ogilvy moved back into the world's top 10 players. Now he needs to figure a way to keep this level of play going forward. Remember he won last February and then slid back into the pack, due to his trying too hard, and practicing harder than his norm. Again time will tell. All but eight of the winners only field are staying on to play in Honolulu next week at the Sony Open. A much better prospect than going anywhere in the states since even Florida has been below freezing temperatures recently.

A few names that stood out over the week; Matt Kuchar hung around the lead but never really threatened, and finished alone in third. Sean O'Hair was within two of the lead on the tee of the 72nd hole, then pulled a shot into the weeds and a fourth play finish. Steve Stricker shot a first round 73 and got better every day. All the players shot under par for the tournament, only the second time since 1999
that's happened.

This was the first tournament with the new grooves in play and the difference didn't appear to affect overall scoring. It was rather obvious on some shots that the ball didn't spin nearly as much as in the past. I have to confess I didn't watch the week end very closely however, so I'll with hold judgment for now.
