For Lydia Ko, wrist and cyst go hand-in-hand

Published

on

If reports are true, Lydia Ko may be facing wrist surgery that would require months of recovery. Reports are surfacing from a variety of sources indicating that the Kiwi teen has had a cyst drained on occasion this season. After a tie for third at the Wegman’s LPGA two weeks ago, Ko fell off a good bit in defense of her Canadian Women’s Open title with a tie for 55th, including a final-round 76.

Reports indicate that she returned home to Florida, visited with a specialist, and underwent an MRI on the affected area.

Lydia Ko is not entered in this week’s Portland event, but plans to return to action the second week of September at the Evian Championship in France. Any surgery, however, would likely bring about a 60-day recovery period.

The back of the wrist is a common spot for ganglion cysts to develop. The growths typically rise out of a joint, are more common in women than men, and often occur in the wrists of young gymnasts and others who place repeated stress on the wrist. It is not known if Ko has been diagnosed with a ganglion cyst, or whether she will play in the year’s final major.

A “funny” rhyming headline for an article like this? Yeah, I bet Lydia Ko finds it frickin hilarious to have a cyst that may need to be surgically removed.

If it proves to be a ganglion cyst, I would be surprised if it required a 60 day recovery period. Some years ago I had a ganglion cyst removed from the back of my left wrist.i had the procedure performed in December so as to not interfere with the golf season(I reside in Wisconsin). After waiting one week, I opted to get in a quick 18 holes since there was no snow and the temperatures in the 30s. No problem, no discomfort, no ripped stitches.

With you, Paul. I read up on ganglion cysts and they seem to be the other side of the carpal tunnel syndrome. I’m sure someone will correct me on that one. The more you work them, the more prone they are to injury or some restriction.

Dang to bad. I hope she gets better.
