Cleveland Scoring Clinics: What you need to know

Published

on

You might have heard of Cleveland’s Scoring Clinics, which are taking place across the U.S. this summer to help golfers improve their wedge games. I was able to attend a Scoring Clinic at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif., which lasted about 90 minutes and included 20 golfers, most of whom had never experienced a club fitting or lesson before.

The event opened with a discussion about why the short game is so important and the differences in wedge design. Participants were then broken up into groups and rotated through three stations: full swing, bunker play and pitching/chipping. The clinic was lead by Cleveland’s Northern California rep, Eddie Seefeldt, with instruction from a pair of Haggin Oaks teaching professionals, Greg Ciavarelli and Calvin Carpenter.

A fundamental key to shooting lower scores is improving scoring inside 125 yards. Many golfers struggle as they get closer to the green because they lack the proper tools and technique needed for wedge shots. They often have large yardage gaps between clubs, causing the need for partial swings. When coupled with poor mechanics, partial shots can turn important scoring opportunities into a guessing game.

Throw into the mix OEMs offering wedges with lofts that range from 46-to-64 degrees with a variety of bounce angles and grinds and consumers can be easily confused about what setup gives them the best chance to shoot their lowest score. Cleveland’s Scoring Clinics are a solution, giving an education in wedge design, instruction from a certified teaching professional and fitting of a Cleveland 588 RTX wedge all for just $125.

The reception from the participants was incredible and everyone I spoke with enjoyed the experience. Many players added more than one new wedge to their bag, each fit for their swing. Some players clicked well with the instructors and wanted to get their first private lessons. One man told me he was so pleased with how well the wedge fitting went he wanted to get fit for a set of irons.

Learning fundamentals and getting properly fit provide a solid foundation to build and improve your golf game.

Cleveland Golf is very popular in Australia, they are great clubs at excellent pricing, definitively a best buy. However, demo days and fittings are non existent. Hopefully this initiative may come Down Under.

Slab city on the Korn Ferry Tour — Lead Tape Report

Published

on

This week, we have our Tour Photographer, Greg Moore, on the ground at the OccuNet Classic at Tascosa Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, for the 14th event of the 2026 Korn Ferry Tour season. With that, we see some great things in the Lead Tape Report as we roll into Amarillo.

Joel Thelen

Monday Qualifier, Joel Thelen is in the field this week. He has played on the Korn Ferry Tour for a full season in 2023, and he is back in action this week. A couple of clubs caught my eye this week in his bag.

First off: His trusted Titleist 816 H2 hybrid. This club came out in October of 2015, and it still remains strong in the bag. Also, take a look at this Odyssey White Hot OG 7, putting a capital S in the 7S model. This custom neck has some impressive lean for an arm-lock-style putter. The bottom of the putter is covered in tape for optimal weighting.

Mitchell Meissner

Taking a look at Mitchell Meissner’s bag this week, we have some great lead tape coverage. Top to bottom working from fairway metals, irons, and wedges. We can see on the short irons and wedges that there is tape at the base of the grip, adding a little counterbalance. Along with that, some tape on the short irons and wedges as well. Moving to his putter, he rolls the Odyssey 7 Bird putter. Meissner putts left-handed and strikes the ball right-handed.
