Ishikawa accepts 2012 PGA Tour Special Temporary Membership

Ryo Ishikawa has accepted special temporary membership to the PGA Tour for the remainder of the 2012 season. In just six starts, Ishikawa has earned $582,471.00, largely based on his second place finish at the Puerto Rico Open, to surpass the No. 150 ranking on the 2011 money list, which is necessary to qualify for special temporary membership.

Ishikawa’s second place finish at the Puerto Rico is his best finish on Tour and third career top ten.

As a result, Ishikawa is eligible to receive unlimited sponsorship exemptions; however, Ishikawa is unable to receive any FedEx Cup points. If the Masters is any indicator, Ishikawa should have no problem receiving as many exemptions as he wants.

The 20 year old, who has won nine times on the Japan Tour, received his second exemption to play in the Masters this year.

In 2011, Ishikawa donated all his winnings plus 100,000 Japanese yen for each birdie to the victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan. At the time he said, “I always believe in myself, but because I am playing for the people of Japan, I feel like I will be playing with a greater purpose this year.”

Ishikawa is already ranked 51st on the all-time money list on the Japan Tour at 539,586,299 yen, which equals approximately $6,458,119.74.

On the course, Ishikawa is most well known for his final round, 12-under par, 58, to win The Crowns tournament for his seventh Japan Tour title on May 2, 2010. The 12-birdie, no bogey round is the lowest ever on a major tour.

However, the course was only 6,545 yards, which is vastly different from the courses he will face on the PGA Tour. In contrast, the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill this week in Orlando is played on a course 7,381 yards long.

Ishikawa is already a golf icon in the Far East and it will be interesting to see if he can garner the same acclaim in America. Similar to Rickie Fowler, Ishikawa’s name and hype have attracted a much younger audience to the game.

However, neither player has been able to break through for their first victory and Ishikawa has struggled to find consistency in a limited schedule. Perhaps with a full season of sponsor’s exemptions, Ishikawa will have the break through so many are expecting.

A reminder from your friends at GolfWRX: Father’s Day is June 21. And as we do every year, we’re rounding up the best gifts for dad.

As we say every year, there’s no better golf-related Father’s Day gift than a round of golf with pops. Be it a country club or your favorite muni, take the time to get together to play 18 if you can.

Let’s get to the gifts.

We like the new polos that Ghost is offering, as the fabric and fit are so good. These new Qualifier Collection polos breathe well, are lightweight, stretch with your swing, and of course look great. You can wear them on the course, in the office, or just out at a casual event and they will fit right in.

When it comes to practice, it is good to have a purpose. This “Putting Thing” sure does it. We know from personal experience how challenging it can be and how rewarding it is on the practice green. This also provides some competition for your kiddo to see who will unload the dishwasher or do the next chore around the house.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
