Villegas Takes Early Lead at Deutsche Bank

Camilo Villegas took the lead by two strokes on Friday at the Deutsche Bank Championship. Ryan Moore and Mike Weir are two back and a group of five more trail by three.

Camilo Villegas started the Deutsche Bank on the right path. Out in 32 and in with a 31 to take a two stroke lead at 8-under 63 on Friday. Villegas leads Mike Weir and Ryan Moore who both shot 6-under 65.

"Kept the ball in play and rolled in some beautiful putts," Villegas said. "I was happy with my round. It’s very early in the week, and it’s time to keep it going."

However, the buzz on the course wasn’t all generated by the low numbers that were put on the board. For the first time on the PGA TOUR, Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, and Phil Mickelson all played in a group together. Unfortunately for the "Big Three" and the fans, they were only able to muster a "Big Three Over" cumulatively.

Tiger Woods shot a one over 72, Phil Mickelson shot a one under par 70, and Vijay Singh posted a three over 74

When Tiger was asked what he thought of the pairing and the day’s events, he decided to let his sarcastic humor take over.

"Over."

Enough said. One word that could easily sum up the feelings of all three players.

"It’s not like I haven’t been in this position before," Woods said to follow. "I kept saying, ‘I basically have 68 holes to make it up."

Villegas played very steady on the first day of the Deutsche Bank Championship that starts Friday and finishes on Monday for Labor Day. He hit 85.7% of his fairways off the tee and followed that with 83.3% of his greens in regulation.

Ryan Moore also had a very good round on Friday with five birdies, an eagle on the very difficult 18th, and a lone bogey at eight.

"Yeah, I’m very happy with the round. It was just solid throughout the day from off the tee and iron shots, and I wasn’t hitting it really close, but fortunately I was making some good length putts. You know, just put together a pretty good round," said Moore.

With its new role in the Fed Ex Playoffs, the Deutsche Bank’s purse swelled to $7 million with $1.26 million to the winner. Following the first week of the playoffs, the media has had a field day questioning the process and how well it is "working". You could ask each player on the TOUR what they think and you would probably get a different response from each. Ryan Moore certainly seems to be a fan.

"I do, actually I like it a lot. I really love everything about it, everything that’s happening, how everything’s playing out. I think that keeps it interesting, keeps it fun and keeps you grinding, definitely, out there, working as hard as you can to keep moving up and getting into those last couple events."

It’s that sense of community that drives day-to-day interactions in the forums on topics that range from best driver to what marker you use to mark your ball. It even allows us to share another thing we all love – buying and selling equipment.

Currently, in our GolfWRX buy/sell/trade (BST) forum, @HuskerFlyer is sharing a Scotty Cameron GOLO with a BGT Stability Tour2 2022 M Edition shaft. While the putter is certainly enviable, the Augusta-inspired shaft is equally noteworthy.
