Jerry Kelly Captures Zurich Classic Title

After 200 starts and 7 years, Jerry Kelly once again finishes atop the leaderboard at PGA Tour event. A final round 71 which he capped off with an 18 inch putt for par on the 18th hole to win by a stroke. “This has been a long time coming,” Kelly said. Indeed it has. This is Mr. Kelly’s third tour win, his first coming 200 starts into his career at the Sony Open and quickly followed up by a victory the same year, 2002, at the Advil Western Open. A cheesehead from Madison, Wisconsin, Mr. Kelly had this Wisconsin native among the many cheering him on Sunday afternoon. I found myself matching contortions with him most of the afternoon.

All afternoon players made runs up the scoreboard in an effort to catch the man who began the day with a three shot lead. After a bogey at number 10, his second of the day and a Charles Howell III birdie on the 11th, one of his six on the day, Mr. Kelly found himself three shots behind the lead. “You know, it wasn’t my tournament to lose anymore,” Kelly said. “It was my tournament to go get. And that’s the mind-set I took after 10.” And a birdie on the 11th hole started that process quite nicely, thank you very much.

In the end it was Mr. Howell’s inability to close the deal which provided the victor his winning margin. Bogeys on the 15th hole, thanks to a short iron that was at least a club too long, and the 18th hole, he hit a hooking low 5 wood into the par 5 only to have the ball run through the green and down the slope, were Mr. Howell’s undoing. Make two pars, take home some nice hardware and a million buck. That finish reminded me of another Wisconsinite, Steve Stricker, who has been close to winning a couple of times this year only to cough up the lead on the back nine each time. Tough stuff for the head to absorb, I don’t care how many times they keep saying, "If I keep putting myself in this position I will get it done!" Maybe. And maybe the neural circuits short out so bad if one even sniffs the top five the game goes down the trash chute.

Steve Marino eagled the par 4 16th hole from just over the green to move within a shot of the lead. One of those shots that if it hadn’t hit the pin and gone in would have finished twenty five feet beyond the hole. Skillfully lucky. He was undone on the 18th hole as well when his tee shot found the very front of a fairway bunker forcing a wedge out and a 200 yard third shot that wound up in the front bunker. The tee shot was two feet off line and the third shot was about four feet short. Skillfully unlucky. The Game giveth and the Game taketh away.

Congratulations to Mr. Kelly for a deserving victory. Not bad at all for an old hockey player, not bad at all.
