See JFK’s golf swing

Published

on

As you may know, Friday, Nov. 22, 2013 marked the 50th anniversary of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963. America commemorated and honored his life with television shows, stories and ceremonies.  In appreciation of his life and love of golf, we will honor him by showing off his sweet swing and even sweeter pants. Take notes Ian Poulter.

In August of 1963, Kennedy brought a White house photographer out with him to Hyannis Port Golf Club in Hyannisport, Mass. while on a family vacation.  This version of the video comes equipped with some rather sappy music, so if you want the full effect I suggest listening to it on mute.

JFK was planning on showing the video to Arnold Palmer to get feedback on his swing, but he never had the opportunity after his fateful trip to Dallas. After later seeing the video, Palmer said, “What’s he doing there? His hands are too close to his body. His putting looks like somebody I know– me!”

Even on the golf course, JFK was representing for the red, white and blue. Nothing is more American than an untucked blue collared shirt, red golf pants (or maybe coral/salmon if you prefer?) and white socks visible from below the pants leg. Whether you favor the right or left, he was an undeniably cool guy, with obviously awesome taste in fashion.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

    Very cool

A fine example for those golf instructors out there in cargo shorts.

He would have to tuck in his shirt if he wanted to play at my club.

Still remember the day he passed.

4pillars…he could play nude at your club and it would not matter.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

Published

on

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
