English wins the OHL Classic

Published

on

The PGA Tour season concluded with a glimpse of the future, as Harris English shot a final-round 65 to win the OHL Classic at Mayakoba by four shots over Brian Stuard. It is English’s second win on the PGA Tour in six months, giving him a win in both the 2013 and 2013-2014 PGA Tour seasons.

“It was an awesome win,” English said. “I was a lot more comfortable out there than I was in Memphis a couple of months ago.”

English built momentum on Saturday morning, finishing up the rain-delayed second round with a 9-under 62, the lowest round of his career. English was tied for the lead with Robert Karlsson at 15-under when Round 3 was suspended Saturday because of darkness, which set up a 30-hole finish on Sunday. Karlsson started Sunday with a birdie at the par-3 eighth hole to get him to 16-under. But English followed up his second-round 62 with a 68 in Round 3. That put him one shot back of Karlsson’s lead at 15-under, tied with Kevin Stadler and Rory Sabbatini.

English seemed to find a zone with his putting in Mexico after switching to Ping Scottsdale HoHum putter he used in college (click here to see what other clubs English used in victory). He had an early blip in Round 4, a bogey on No. 2, but he came right back with a birdie on No. 2 and six more in a 10 hole stretch from holes Nos. 4 through 14. Karlson, on the other hard, bogeyed Nos. 12 through 14 to fall out of contention. He finished the tournament 15-under, tied for sixth place.

At one point, Sabbatini looked as though he may have been English’s main rival. He garnered three consecutive birdies on holes Nos. 12 through 14, but bogeys on Nos. 15 and 18 dropped him back to 16-under, five back of English in a tie for third place.

Stadler also stumbled in Round 4, shooting a 74 that slid him all the way into a tied for 12th.

With the PGA Tour across the border in Canada this week, GolfWRX Tour Photographer Greg Moore stayed stateside and headed to the OccuNet Classic presented by Amarillo National Bank in Amarillo, Texas.

It’s always interesting to see what the guys are playing on the KFT, and this week certainly hasn’t disappointed so far, with some incredible wedge stamping on display.
