Tweets of the week: cocktails, Movember and bad grammar, too

Published

on

The Silly Season is in full swing. Quality golf is being played, yes, but do golf fans really still have an appetite for it, as they hunger more for football than fairways?

Tiger Woods made a strong showing in Turkey, as did Justin Rose, before both relented to the assault of the mighty Victor Dubuisson. But really, Dubuisson played spectacular golf, as did Chris Kirk at the McGladrey Classic, where Briny Baird, foil that he is, came up just short for the 2,345th time (something like that).

Whether you have an appetite for more golf, or are overstuffed at this point, surely there’s room for the few frivolous morsels that are the Tweets of the week.

I’m not obsessive about proper grammar on Twitter, but really, Brittany Lincicome, two major snafus in in a tweet of less than 20 characters? The golfer could have achieved the coveted horrible grammar hat trick with an improper instance of “there,” “they’re, “their.” Maybe next time.

Movember is upon us and golf’s finest touring professionals are getting in on the action. Just look at Shane Lowry. Better yet, avert your eyes. Fertilizer, indeed.

77-year-old former PGA Tour winner and incredibly active Twitterer Larry Mowry gives voice to popular sentiment in this tweet.

Cool? I’ll remain impartial. What do you think, readers?

Of course, it wouldn’t be “Tweets of the week” without a dose of David Lynn, or in this case, a sip.

On a note more serious than usually sounded in “Tweets,” we at GolfWRX echo Cristina Kim’s sentiments on Veterans Day.

AVL: My U.S. Amateur local qualifying experience

Published

on

This past Monday, I played in the U.S. Amateur local qualifier at Rock Creek Country Club in Portland, Oregon. A full tee sheet from 7:30 a.m. to 1:55 p.m., the top 11 scores would make it to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying.

I teed off at 10:48 a.m.. With the 7:30 am tee time, you can get a feel for the leaders’ pace, and they were off and running on the challenging setup at Rock Creek.

Getting to the highlight of the round on the par five 17th, a drive up the left side and 212 yards left to the front hole location. I took out a 5-iron with plans of middle of the green. The ball ended up 8 feet left of the hole, pin high. A slight downhill putt dropped in for an eagle 3 on the 17th. With the cut line looking to be anywhere from -2 to even par. This was the boost I had been waiting for all day.

With making par from the trees on 18, it was time to wait for a potential playoff with a posted score of one under par 71.

Three hours later, it was playoff time. 8 players for 6 spots. I made par on the playoff hole, which was good enough to advance to the U.S. Amateur final qualifying in July. USGA qualifiers sure deliver on all of the emotions in golf!
