Y.E. Yang Tops Honda Field
Y.E.Yang captured his first PGA tour victory Sunday, winning the Honda Classic by a single stroke. Mr. Yang, who defeated Tiger Woods three years ago, said this was much more satisfying a victory. How can that be one might ask? Well, for this victory he gets to play in the CA Championship at Doral this week, a two year exemption on the PGA tour, a million dollar plus pay check, an invite to the Masters, and that nifty crystal trophy he’s smooching in the picture above. Certainly enough ingredients to concoct an elixir of satisfaction.
Mr. Yang began the day one shot atop the leaderboard, thanks to some remarkably steady play the first three days of the tournament, during which he recorded only two bogeys. With birdies on holes three, four and five he managed to open a lead on the rest of the field. He needed those birdies to offset the three bogeys he recorded the rest of his round, including both par threes in the dreaded "Bear Trap" stretch of holes 15, 16, and 17.
Robert Allenby had himself right in the mix after beginning the day three back of the leader, until the 12th hole. He recorded his fifth three putt of the week and found himself trailing by four shots. All I could think was "ouch" it hurts so much to smack oneself in the shins that many times. Then on the 13th he hit his tee shot into a bunker on the left side of the fairway for the second day in a row. To complete the similarity he bogeyed the hole and watched his chances sail off into the distance.
John Rollins put up the best chase, with four birdies in five holes from number 8 thru 12. At this point in his round he had 7 one putts, in stark contrast to Mr. Allenby’s woes. His birdie on the 18th hole, combined with Mr. Yang’s bogey on the 17th left the lead at a single shot. Johnny Miller helped create an air of tension when he noted that Mr. Yang’s chances of winning had dwindled to one in ten as he stood on the 18th tee. A drive in the fairway, and layup to 111 yards left Mr. Yang with a wedge in his hand to get close to the pin, and two putt for the victory. The swing he put on that wedge brought a cringe to his face and more doubt into the picture as the ball ended up 50 feet left of the hole. Per Mr. Miller the chances of victory sank to one in three. As he had all week, Mr. Yang cozied that putt to about ten inches from the hole and his first win.
As for Mr. Rollins, “I have no complaints,” Rollins said. “I did all I can do. Shot 3 under on championship Sunday and came up short.”
He did indeed play well, one of the few who moved in the correct direction up the leaderboard on Sunday.
Even more notable than Mr. Yang’s victory, and in no way taking anything away from the South Koreans’ marvelous win, was the week Erik Compton delivered. Walking all four rounds, despite having permission to use a cart since only nine months ago he received his third heart, he finished tied for 44th place at 3 over par. He’ll play next week in Puerto Rico, take off a week, then play at Arnold Palmer’s tournament at Bay Hill on sponsor’s exemptions. The thought of having your chest cracked open like a lobster shell not once but twice is enough to make me reach for the bottle of Aleve and a double dose. Good for you sir! I salute you for removing forever any whining I may be inclined to indulge in the next time I feel a twinge in a location a twinge does not belong. A wimp needs a reminder every now and then about what it really means to suck it up and stomp on the whiny girlie man trying to impose himself on my playing partners. I stand fully chastised.
